After 23 years of business my buddy decided to shut the doors on his ski shop. With all the new outlits and a new sports authority his numbers fell. Sad but a hard business to run on an Island. The good part is my girls got boots skis and gear for very cheap.

Sad when the mom and pops cant survive.....shame...

bet noone in the area will get "good" advice, especially if they are purchasing ski equipment from the likes of the "sports authority" or "dicks"....oh well...

Exactly. I hate seeing the "boxes" take out the locals.

Shame...

Soon consumers will learn that cheaper isnt better......knowledge has a cost associated with it.

All can say is if you buys skis at Sports Authority you'd better have done your research FIRST...you will get nothing from the stoned high schoolers that work there...

I now find myself going further north for gear. The two shops I buy at are Rogers in Lincoln NH and Buchikas in Salem, NH. Those are the only two ski shops I have bought anything from in the last few years

Also all the gear, both new and used, that can be bought on line have takin business away from the shops. I'll bet almost every poster in AZ has bought some gear on-line, even if it's just gloves, goggles, etc. I’m going to start a poll in the Gear and Equipment Forum about it.

It's a tough business.

I agree with all of the above. It is especially hard to run a decent mom and pop type ski shop on long island. You not only have to compete with the big box (modells, dicks, etc.) but also the large chain shops like Princeton and ski stop. People have gotten so numb to horrible service that at this point it is expected. A friendly salesperson in a mom and pop shop is no longer worth paying slightly more in the eyes of the general skiing public on long island.

Sad when knowledge and experience are lost on the consumer....I cant think of anything I like better than chatting with a knowledgable individual about a product or sport...most times this is EXACTLY what sells me on a shop. Knowledge and service.

Ask one of the many "knowledgeable" staffers at your local "big box" sporting goods store where a particular item may be located and you mostly get blank stares like you're speaking swahili, forget about asking their opinion on specific gear.

SAVE THE MOM AND POPS...BUY YOUR GEAR FROM THEM IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.
