I just did the Okemo/Sunapee/Stratton midweek.

Why?

Weekends are kind of beat. My schedule allows for midweek daytrips. ASC passes not so attractive as hauling to K for a day trip add an hour; and Mt. Snow isn't worth it. Okemo is good for early season (opening two days after K), and when conditions are crap, they are the place to be; Stratton is close and the woods are great.

I never have gone to Mt. Sunappee, don't know if I'll try it.

It's the Bronze pass here too BobR,
With a season pass...you don't feel like you've gotten cheated out of mega_$$$ when it gets crowded and you'd like to do something else. Leaving @noon on the weekends is not a once in a lifetime occurance

Re: Mad River Valley & passes

For me and my family, I bought the Sugarbush family passes. While it's on the expensive side, by paying $989 + tax, I get an unlimited pass for me plus one free Jr. pass for one of my children under 12. I also then get Jr. passes for the rest of my children under 12 for $199 + tax. It would have been cheaper if I had bought before May 5.

Since I own a condo in the MRV, it makes sense for me and my family (wife plus 4 children) to get the SB passes. We're up there all the time so we get our money's worth. I would love it if SB dropped their season pass prices (as someone suggested they are out of touch with the recent trend of affordable season passes).

We also pick-up a Mad Card from MRG. You get 3 days of skiing and all 4 of my children get free season passes at MRG. No one beats that deal!

We also are in the valley with a townhouse. And we're sort of doing a modified reverse version of this, with Mad River Glen season passes, with the driving force being the lesson programs at MRG.

I've got a 5 and 7 year old who'll get free season passes at MRG when I get my $680 adult MRG pass. Then, we'll get both boys in a 2-day (Sat and Sunday) season long lesson program with lunches included - 9:30 to 2:30 coverage - with ridiculously low instructor to student ratios - 1 instructor per 3 or 4 kids. The price for this $550 per kid plus $150 for lunch upgrade, and this goes every weekend from December 17 to March 19th. Therefore, "all in", we're at $2,080+ tax for my boys and me (my wife is mellowing out ski-wise in a passless state this season, with the addition of our now 8 month old girl...we'll x-country, snowshoe, drink cocoa, etc.). With the little guys getting 5 hours daily of tutelage with MRG's highly rated ski school in addition to their passes, this should be a superb foundation for their ski life. In terms of break even, I'm thinking vs. daily costs it's about the three of us doing 10 of these pass/lesson days.

While I'm tempted to get a 'Bush pass (greedy little bugger that I am) for myself...I'll just go a'la carte as needed on midweek powder days (when I've snuck up to the valley by myself) if I'm "jonesing for 'bush" and I want to deviate from the Glen's offerings. Win-win all around, as far as I'm concerned - heaven help me if they ever have a valley wide pass.

And next year we can tweak this program as necessary, partially based on the lesson program costs - the Glen's quality and pricing there pretty much can't be beat (especially compared to Sugarbush's lesson programs and pricing). I want all my kids to build their ski skills with season long lesson programs into at least, I would think, their early teens. By that time, I'll be watching them blow by me over Paradise's waterfalls as I pick my old man line....

I don't like polls so I won't add one. It looks like about 1/2 have some form of ASC pass and the rest have a variety of passes. I wonder who had a pass for an ASC skiing resort, before the Allforones.

Jiminy

I've got a Jiminy Peak pass for the 2nd year running. For 300 bucks, it's a great deal - it's only 45 mins from home (Albany), open every night and powder days can get you at least 5 good clean runs if you get there at first chair. It's not the most fun, rugged nor place, but you can find your own some cool and challenging lines. Oh yeah, powder nights can be absolutely awesome...I caught at least 4 nor'easters at night last year and those can get pretty surreal.

Every other weekend, I'll chase deals and coupons to other areas in the NE. For a guy who likes to get around, Jiminy is still a great practice hill.

MRV Season Pass Options

smootharc: That sounds like a good plan for you. MRG's ski school is great for kids and the SB programs are expensive, especially with multiple children. Have you done that in past years? I love MRG but I'm wondering what you do if its a light snow year since MRG doesn't make a lot of snow?

Also, that plan wouldn't be good for us because I currently have one snowboarder with another making rumblings about wanting to 'board. I wish they would all ski but I'm not willing to prohibit them from boarding as some parents I know do. I'd rather share the good times on the snow with them than get hung up on whether they ski or ride. :) Plus they all first learned to ski so my boarder(s) put skis on when we go to MRG.

We ought to ski together some time at MRG this season while your children are in ski school and you're hitting the Single without the wife and baby. :D

You see right through me....

And, yes, there's the snow issue at MRG...rolling the dice this year.

I believe the All East College pass pre-dates the All Four One pass... I only had the All East my last year of college (last winter) but I believe that's where the All Four One idea came from.

I think the spring into March pass had alot to do with it. I bought that pass. It was $199 then $209 I believe. It gave all Eastern ASC resorts (like today's pass) from March 1st until resort closings. I think I got 13 days out on the pass. That was a sweet deal.
I had sent a e-mail to ASC asking if the Sunday River/Attitash pass was going to be an option again last year. SunsanD (Sunday River) said just wait we have one better coming. Then the ASC All4one was announced. I bought it last year within 5 min of it going on sale through the broadcast e-mail. Same this year. I buy my threedom while I'm still skiing at Loon the previous season. Early season is the cheapest with the most perks. I can be unemployed living in a shoe, but I will ski.

No, the "All East" has been around since the company has existed. It sold for about $1500 each in the earlier years. The discount concept might be partially attributed to the ASC College programs, but mainly they were concerned with making lots of money fast.

I guess my point was the Spring into March pass with multi locations seemed to be a step towards cost effective passes.... Not to mention I think Booth Creeks Threedom pass was eating into the day ticket skier purchases of ASC. If you cant beat them join them.

This statement reminds me of another truism that is usually applied to something else that some people drool over.

"I'd rather have skiing with no money than have money with no skiing."

How very, very true. I couldn't agree with you more, Bob R!!

I had to laugh this morning. I got a student season pass offer from Stowe--most expensive option available for students at $425 and yet there ARE blackouts. Just goes to show that they went for insult to injury--highest price and bucking the market trend by insisting on blackouts. Go figure!
