Obviously it's not a secret if I'm sharing but I wonder if others might wish to trade their findings.

Terrain Parks:
Lots of freshies left on these runs as all the traffic focuses on the hits and rails.

Racing/Training in progress:
Once they drop the rope, plenty of freshies where the gates weren't set.

I'm a little confused about what you are asking for here.... like secret stashes on mountains?

To me that means like secret woods and places the ski patrol would rather not see you be.

Or are you talking about something else?

Nah, I wasn't referring to the places that annoy patrol. I was thinking more along the lines of once the freshies on the main runs have been used and abused and we're getting closer and closer to the tree line as we grab the last of the pow, where can we still find 6 or 7 more deep turns in-bounds. Out of bounds is a WHOLE different topic that I wasn't going to approach ... yet.

I like this talk. Your first 2 suggestions are favorites of mine. Also, in general: family mountains. It is amazing the side-stashes you can find at Bretton Woods & Cranmore days and days after Cannon & Wildcat are infinitely tracked-out.

I never understood the attraction to "fresh powder"... I mean, I guess it's fun to ski through fresh powder if it's a really steep slope.

Otherwise fresh pow just slows me down too much. I like my woods tracked out for the most part, especially if it's soft snow.

I can't figure out if this is sarcasm. If it is...haha! If it isn't....good!!

No sarcasm ... nothing is worse than getting bogged down in a bunch of heavy deep powder on a slope that isn't steep.

I had a day like that last year at Mad River Glen it was like an 18" fresh snowfall overnight but it was so heavy and dense... fortunately MRG is a pretty steep ski area so this was actually a blessing on trails like Paradise and Fall Line...

But on the runout of Lower Antelope... it was like me and several other dudes just trudging through this wet heavy powder.

If the powder is not wet and it's nice dry powder that's sort of fun to ski in but you can't really get an aggressive edge in deep dry powder it's more like floating along.

I prefer to ski aggressively therefore I like woods that are all tracked out.

You're doing it wrong. You say "but you can't really get an aggressive edge" and that is correct: you don't edge powder. But that doesn't mean you can't ski powder aggressively (usually). It took me a while to get it. I was a racer in high school and college and never skied anything that wasn't groomed or hard pack. Its a different style and technique. I ski powder very aggressively. Oh yea, don't make first tracks down LA at MRG (unless you truly love skiing LA untracked). Blower on low angle rules. But flats are flats. Let someone else break the trail.

The ONLY way to ski powder is aggressively. Speed is your friend.

But now I understand your disdain for snowboarding a little better. If you don't understand powder you definitely won't understand snowboarding.

The problem with most East coast inbounds trails is how narrow they are, not much hidden freshies to be found. Out west..whole different story..miles of hidden gems if you know where to look..and can get there..

Huh?? Like the rest of your posts, you sound like a GD idiot saying that.

What's the matter, afraid of a little ice and crust?

Thanks Bill.. no doubt it's all about the float. That is kind of fun.. but I'm skiing on Rossi Phantom SC80 185cm skis which are insanely awesome skis for variable conditions but due to the narrow cut they don't give me as much float as some of the "fat" skis out there.

I mean I can get some decent flotation in the right conditions and that is kind of fun ... idk maybe its ever since high school race league I've been taught to and learned to love always keeping an edge.

Lately I have been trying different things like sking backwards and spinning around and some basic freestyle kinda stuff to try to deversify my style. I've been good at carving for a long time... last few years I've got really good at steep jump-turn type backcountry stuff and have mostly gone for that... this year I'm working more on my overall flow and style and like smooth transitions from any type of terrain to any other type of terrain.. trying to enjoy the whole mountain I guess.

I still pretty much suck at moguls though.

But what you're talking about isn't powder.

I blame corporate ski area BS marketing for perverting the term.

Especially in the East. I've even seen "fresh groomed powder" on ski reports
