Considering the source, it should be taken with a grain of salt, but I found this interesting. I was reading the January issue last night, which had pocket guides for Jay Peak and Moonlight Basin in it.

For the Jay Peak guide, it reads as follows:

The Sneak: To avoid weekend crowds, head straight for the chutes skier's left of the tram - Tuckermans and Face. These fun, mellow pitches  are a better way to get to the lower glades than dodging traffic on Ullr's Dream.

Has the author and editor of the magazine ever even skied Face Chutes? Whenever the topic of steepest trail in the east comes up, Face is almost always at or near the top of the list. I wonder if they later corrected this in a future article. Someone who doesn't know the mountain could get themselves in WAY over their head by reading that.

They interview locals for these guides, so maybe someone was having a little fun with them.

I actually meant to start a thread about that very topic after I saw the guide (I apparently forgot  ). I thought this was pretty funny until I though of all of gappers that could potentially be side-slipping their way down Tuckermans chute. I would like to find out if this was meant to be some sort of joke. Most likely once a beginner/intermediate who thought they were going to take a "mellow pitch" down to the glades would probably just turn around when they got to the top of the chutes and head back to Ullr's.

What kills me is the continuing (willful?) confusion between % pitch and degree slope. If I read one more stupid description of an Eastern resort with some trail that's 40 degrees or more steep, I'll scream. I'd venture to say that there is not a single on-map run in the East with an average steepness of 40 degrees or greater, including the Slides at WF.

Even most of Jackson Hole is less than 40 degrees pitch in bounds..You don't have to be smart to write for skiing magazine..most of the readers are gapers.

Yea, The Sneak is totally right. If you want to avoid the weekend crowds, the Tram is the best lift on the mountain. You don't even need to take the Face Chutes or Tuckerman Chute, that Tram puts you right above the hoards and masses. Great advice for those looking to avoid the weekend crowds at Jay.

...even further disturbing about this 'pocket guide' is on the back it instructs skiers how to exit the north gate and go out to ski Big Jay.

Overall a real big F up of an article. Bet they got their fair share of complaints over the mis-guidance.

I guess I didn't read the back very carefully. The "North Gate" would be off toward the mountain named North Jay (see future expansion). The Big Jay gate is WSW and as most of us know was closed this year. However, in their defense it may be that the guide was written before the closure was widely known about.
Still no excuse for this crap guide.
