I know that State Police sometimes run sting operations at various resorts where they setup bait and watch for someone to steal it.

They do it at Hunter.. i don't hear too much about decks getting stolen at Hunter... Maybe it's cause security carries guns and makes their presence known...

armed security? damn that's hardcore for a ski area. I've never seen that before.

Yup - a couple of ex-cops that carry weapons.. Also have Troopers stopping in as well..

We are season pass holders of MC and live in Sussex County.

Marc I believe I know you from the tri-stateweather message board. Does the screen name Accumulation21 ring a bell? If so that's me.

Yup I'm also on that board. You can see why I love snow...gotta have it for the skiing! Man are there a bunch of whiners on that board or what? Do you really expect to get big snows in Queens or Jersey City??? As long as the mountains get snow, I am HAPPY!

Man, if security's armed, I'd hate to see what they do to trail poachers.

What scares me is the quality of their security.

If they're comparable to the security at my local mall I don't think I ever want to visit Hunter. I think I'd feel safer without them.

No these guys are just ex-cops... Pretty mellow.. you won't see them that much..

When you think about the amount of cash that gets raked in at a place like Hunter - it's probably a good idea.. Didn't Killington just get robbed last month?

Yes they did; there's at least one smart gang of crooks out there that realize they are better off stealing cash than skis or snowboards.

IF I was going to risk jail time, you can bet I'd pass on the chump change (no offense Mitchmac, not saying your son's board is chump change) and go for the mother load.

No offense taken JimG. I've tried to put myself inside the mind of someone who does something like steal a kid's snowboard and I just don't get it in a lot of ways.

Hunter is the unoffical home mountain for the NYPD. It would take a pretty stupid crook to target it.

No doubt - I know tons of cops.. A couple play in one of my bands... :)

Don't even try - who knows what forces people to steal...

That IS a good idea. You guys have all been helpful and I thank you. Just knowing that other people have been through it or have some kind of sympathy for my son makes me feel better.

My son goes to MC on Wednesday nights with the town rec, so he went last night on a season rental (full price for half a season) and I went along to scope things out. A couple observations:
1) You never know how many different kinds of snowboards there are until you've looked at every kid getting on the cab lift at MC.
2) Just a guess, but it looked like around 90% of the snowboards on the racks are unlocked. I know - and I'm sure dmc's gonna laugh at this one - my son will never be doing that in the future.
3) No offense to you snowboarders, but around 25% of the snowboarding population looks fully capable of ripping off someone else's snowboard. And,
4) Kids are a helluva lot more resilient than us adults sometimes. As bad as I felt the other night seeing my son's face when he figured out his board was gone, I felt that good seeing him smile after he finished his last run last night and told me what a great time he had. And I don't think he was just saying that to make me feel better.

Well, I'll be around.
