Great news! I get my first runs in every year at Snowshoe in December. They got off to a rough start last year. Looking forward to trying out the new trails.

I'm not suprised by this. Snowshoe has an even more difficult time than New England resorts in getting early season skiers as obviously the markets they draw from have even warmer weather then here in New England.

In reality, if Snowshoe wanted to, they could easily compete for first open in the east. Almost all of their terrain is above 3900' evelvation. I lived and worked there for a year, which was an average snow year and there was far more natural than New England except for Northern Vermont. Temps for the most part were comparable too.

It's a suprisingly large resort especially in terms of real estate development. There's not a resort in New Enlgand that comes close to having a base village in size and scope to there.

Have to admire those West Virginian's for their sole.............

No doubt.. That place has always interested me...
A friend of mine worked there for a few years and said when it's good - it's tough to beat...

I wouldn't go that far

Outside of the two runs on the Western Territory, the terrain is pretty short, flat and boring. I really don't understand why they haven't made the effort to put more terrain in on that side of the mountain. They own all the land, at the time I was there they had approval for expansion, yet they expanded terrain on an area of the Basin side with 600 vert. They could easily add a half dozen runs on the west side where there's 1500 vert.

Then again, the people who go there, really don't go there to ski. They go to party HARD. Same could be said about Seven Springs.

Yes snowshoe doesn't have much terrain other than the Western territory but those two runs are the best trails south of the Catskills. They are worth the drive for us vert challenged southern folks. You can dodge the brutal lift lines on the bunny slopes and have those trails serviced by a high speed lift without any line on the weekend. I spend 80 percent of my time there on those two trails. It would be nice to see them add to the western side but I think the main reason they added trails on the other side was to service the new condos.

They really lose elevation in the western territory, and that's the key to good snow in WV. I think it would be a challenge to keep snow on it for any substantial part of the season.

It really didn't seem to be a problem when I lived there, which as mentioned previously was an average winter. The base of the WT is still above 3000 feet. Does it hold snow like the Basin? No, but it does well enough to be open from Christmas through the end of March.
