I’m right there with you. As I’ve gotten older, perfectly groomed cruisers just don’t do much for me anymore. They’re fast and smooth, sure, but they feel kind of predictable. The “banged up” stuff you’re describing — rocks, weird cambers, double fall lines, little surprises — that’s where skiing actually feels alive.
Runs like Killington Resort’s Old Superstar or The Jug and Goat at Stowe Mountain Resort have so much character. You’re constantly reading terrain instead of just pointing it. And yeah, not seeing lifts or lodges makes it feel way more backcountry-adjacent, even inbounds.
Totally agree on High Rustler at Alta Ski Area too — that sketchy entrance keeps the crowds honest. Those kinds of runs filter for people who actually want to ski, not just cruise. Way more fun and way less traffic.
