Looks like most people are betting on Sunday River. I can't wait for the snow guns to start firing, then we'll know for sure after not too long. :spread:

Hey B--

You ever been to Sunday River? I think you'd like it. It's got a lot of good variety.

I always thought the best set up for early and late season skiing would be Cannon Mt with the Profile Chair trail pod and Up and down loading via the tram. I guess being owned by the state, it will never happen. My belief is that the elevation would allow making and retaining snow while the valleys were still bare.

I'd run that by the new manager...as in the guy who has been there the last two years and done a lot to improve the mountain and its image. They blow more snow and groom more. He used to work for Sunday River, so he understands how season length is important. I've been hearing good things about Cannon lately. We have a Cannon insider or two on here. Hope it gets their attention.

Nope. I haven't made it out that way to ski yet. Not because I have anything against the mountain or anything, it's just kinda far away from here. There's lots of closer places... Someday I'll make it.

Definitely check it out. I figured it was a bit far, but they have run some killer deals before in the past and your family would enjoy it. I think I know an AZer who might be able to get you some good digs there, or at least some folks to hang out with  That's only because he moved the party from Loon to Sunday River.

Last year when they were shoveling snow, actually putting it in trash cans and puttiing the cans on the chairs to take it to the top to re-build the ramps after several NCP events..... That is what is was all about to me. They did not make money, but made some skiers happy. I would bet they sold some season passes for being open early and closing late.

Those guys were working their tails off and I was soooo grateful to them for it. After the first day, the next several were partially NCP events, but mountain ops did what they had to do to keep the place open, by-in-large. As Bobr said, SR didn't make money those early days, but those early days made them money later on in the season as it showed a commitment to skiers and riders.

That would be an excellent option. Depending on the trail you opened from the top, you good DL on the Peabody Express as well.

While a great set up, the only reason I don't see Cannon going for the early open is that a long season does not benefit them as much as most other areas. It might sell a few more passes, but the real marketing win for resorts offering a long season is real estate sales.

No real estate and state funded. Season will always be similar in length. I like the notch more in the summer than the winter. Cannon has a great feel. I love the windy trails.

I still think this would be the earliest opener if it was located in the NE.
The top elevation is around 1200' higher then anything in New England and the base is higher then any summit.

Many moons ago Cannon did exactly this.I believe it was only done two years.I have a ticket somewhere from October 31 one of those years. It was shortly after that they had their lastest closing on May 1st.I really don't see it in the cards anymore.
