That pic was from Saturday. Today was much much much better then that. And it snowed all day. I imagine there is close to 30 inches fresh on top. Tomorrow will be one of the best of the season, as today was. Can't beat the trails before they are open. It's not often we ride pow fields high speed, top to bottom, with no sign of a scratchy base at all. Today was that day. To be fair, the bottom 1/3 of the hill was not that great, but I have never seen conditions vary with altitude as much as they did today. Truely amazing October day.
Sorry, no time for pics.

Looked like pretty even cover. Spruce might even be a good call for late day freshies. I think the word is out and tomorrow will be a busy one on VTs highest peak.
I've been thinking about the potential of this winter storm coming up. Considering we won't lose anything where it counts, by next Monday Tuesday there could be well over 3 feet of fresh. COULD be. Let's not hold our breath, but could you imagne woods runs in OCT????
What did J and Bolton end up with?

I don't doubt it was good, but the stake recorded only 11" new today with a settled base of 17", and that's in the trees at 3900'. Could you be overestimating a tad? then again, there was over 2" of liquid precip, and a 5:1 ratio sounds a little low for temps at 26-28 degrees.

Confusing.

TW....I'm not really asking you to believe me. In fact my buddy Dave kept saying, "this is unbelievable!" I told him he was right, I used to think I had to keep such things a secret, then I relalized that no one believed me anyway so you could tell the world and people are always sceptical. That works for me.
Totals at Stowe so far at the top. 15-20 inches. Mid mountain, at the intersection of Cliff and Nosedive...14 inches. Parking lot...2-4 inches and snowing hard.
Well, last two days have been INSANE. The forcast for Tuesday night was for upslope precip. in the Northern Greens with lake intensificatoin. Several inches possible by Wednesday morning. So Hardy, Dave, and I head up to the hill at 5:45 and meet Tony. It's pouring rain. We have to walk up the hill 100 yards before we could start skinning due to lack of snow. 1/4 mile form the lot, the changeover to all snow. By the top of the first pitch, 6 heavy inches. By mid mountain, 14 inches. By the time we topped out an hour later it was snowing hard with a conservative 18 inches down. Perfect snow. Density gradient from base to top layer was PERFECT. Skinning up we floated in the top inch, mid carve you were knee deep. Cover was perfectly even from left to right. A thick blanket of consistant snow means you can let 'em run. And it was raining in town and in the lot so no one showed. We did Gondolier, Chin Clip, then Gondolier again. 4700 vert feet. We saw 2 other people. The entire hill was our. Still made it to work for the easiest 12-10 shift I've ever worked.

Then is snows all day and all night. Go up today to find that it had warmed up a bit and a light crust had formed about 3-5 inches down. Snow had settled slightly and wind action had blow some of the dust of so there was some crusty spots. Lots of folks there today so we did a Cliff Trail to Nosedive. The bottom half was real manky so one and done for today. Left the hill and it was snowin' HARD. Get another lap in tomorrow as it shows no sign of letting up.

Now we are looking at a BIG winter storm rolling in with the potential for that system to dump feet of snow over the course of 3-4 days on the hill. My Goal is to ski woods in October, and IF we get hit this weekend, I think it will happen. And IF we get hit there will likely be record totals for snow on the hill in this month. Needless to say, ,the stoke is high in Stowe.

Chuch W. from Backcounrty Mag. skied Starr yesterday afternoon. He said it was his best run EVER. TW, you could believe him if you want, he's and editor for a ski mag.
Could it be that's you're just a bit green Woodsy?

I have no doubt that it is probably pretty sick up at Stowe right now, but i think what TW was pointing out is that snow totals almost always get exaggerated. It's all good, i'm sure the skiing couldn't get much better for Oct.

there is NO exageration or overestimation. i can't believe how deep the snow pack is on the top half of mansfield. go get some folks! today was likely the best non-powder day snow i will ski all year. of course, i am not counting 4-6"of pow on top of foot deep plus non-powder base a powder day. bottom half of the mountain has sufferred a fair amount of melting and consolidation, but still generally at least 6" of snow except the very lowest sections. i think this is a better situation than last year. granted there was not a HUGE pow day, but this stuff is sticking and the ground is frozen on the top of the mountain.

Monday could be a woods day in select areas up high. Can't believe it, but I would love to shred some trees in Oct.

What a morning! Got skinning at 6, and made it to mid- mountain for a spectacular sunrise. Went up Nosedive and could not help but to bomb it for our first run. Great cover, 6-12 fresh, visability unlimited, made for the fastest skiing of the season so far. Got back in our skin track for lap 2. Hardy and Christa skied Goat, and I wandered off towards National and Lift Line for a solo run. Dropped into Lift Line with one track down the right edge, so I took the left side. The top was a bit variable due to the wind, But once I got down onto lower National, it was on. Lot's of natural features makes National a really interesting ski. Then back up for one more cruiser, and with the major trails getting pretty played (at least 3 tracks), I went low angle. Centerline to Northslope, to Hacket's Highway to Lords. All untracked.
Really felt great today, my tele is really getting better everyday, and I'm feeling more confident dropping a knee a speed. Five days in October, 4 were great days, today was one fo the best I can remember. Got in 3 laps, all untracked, done by 10. 20-30 cars in the lot when we left. Perfect timing. More snow Wednesday. :D
