I think you are right....

Perhaps some is snowshoeing or hiking as well maybe? Some tracks appear to go behind/past the barn all the way down to German Flats road. That seems a long way to ski... (For some reason at least on my computer these tracks are visible when the heatmap color is "Hot" "Blue" or "Gray" but not when "Red").

i turned to to grey and can see it more clearly - looks like the folks heading to the bar are at the SECOND exit off the trail...some go down to schuss, some out to 17.

But at the FIRST exit of the LOWER antelope.....hmm...might be snowshoeing....looks like they just kind of loop around back to UPPER antelope....some just wander out toward the roads....

That is the trail down to the mad River barn. It actually is signed and is a valid run. People at the barn flag the valley shttle to MRG, ski there for the day and then ski back to the barn for après. it is worth doing at least once.

Okay, then I'll ask perhaps the foolish question:

Why would anyone want to do this?

I was under the impression it wasn't entirely clear if your data was being published/made public or not. I thought the heatmap wasn't just from those who shared their routes on facebook or whatever.

That explained the military base issue to me, at least.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. I find Strava to be a fun platform for sharing training data with training partners. I use it with friends primarily for swim/bike/run activities. The social aspect allows us to support and coach each other even when we can't physically train together. It's not for everyone, but I like it. It generates both world-wide and personal heat maps. The personal maps are fun to analyze the breadth and depth of my own activities. The world-wide ones are great for finding new bike/run routes in unfamiliar places, or finding bodies of water suitable for open-water swimming.

Strava has a feature that allows you to block out your home within a predefined radius, so my publicly viewable routes don't give away my home location.

I didn't buy my Garmin watch for skiing, but I frequently wear it on the slopes, and the data is automatically uploaded to Strava and Garmin Connect along with my other activities. It's kind of interesting to log the number of runs, total vertical, max altitude, etc., and see the map of where I've been. Occasionally I'll throw on my heart rate strap to see my heart rate data, but I don't usually. For me, HR data while alpine skiing is not particularly useful.

Logging the activity also puts it on my training calendar so that I have a record of where I've skied and when (spanning many years) without me having to do anything else. I don't bother to mark these tracks as private, as I'm not going anywhere that zillions of people haven't gone before. I'm guessing that like me, most of the folks who log Strava alpine activities are primarily using Strava for other activities. I can see Strava as being useful for alpine touring, however, where there is a much greater cardiovascular and navigation component.

If your question is why do people record and make public side/backcountry ski routes that they would like to keep private, I have no idea.

Can you give an example? I really don't get it. Are you using it like a diary of where you've been.

I would suspect you're correct simply by looking at where I live. I live next to a large body of water, and there's heat map activity all across the lake from fishing boats. I wouldn't think they're intentionally tracking themselves zig-zagging all over the lake, and of course, the military base example you give is pretty obvious too.

Also, using the Strava heatmap, I was just able to figured out who owns the horse that's been trespassing where I live over the last 5 years, by tracing the route right back to their stable across the street, through the woods, and into my way back yard. I doubt she'd want to "share" that information willingly.

Strava users publicizing to the masses and ruining things they probably cherish like off map glades and bushwhack routes. Nice work, idiots.

Even with this, you and Howie will still get lost in a thicket of pine trees. ;-)

That was Howies friend. He's too out of shape now to lead us into the pine trees, but i still don't trust my Howie to recognize the Lake Champlain side of the mountain from the Mad River side.

As a 21 year old i would like to inform you that without even touching instagram to avoid the jealousy, that many people post pictures of everything to do on facebook or snapchat and I imagine instagram is worse. Most of these posts suck except for a few attractive women, sometimes at the beach.

My strava used to make the first page of google search results for my name, despite being inactive for several years and only used once. I typically use Motion X which has many more features.
