this is gonna sound ridiculous to the majority of people, but i'm looking forward to this 10x more than the two trips i took to killington already. Knowing that there will be a solid bump run to ski is far more enticing to me then skiing a big mountain of primarily groomers. Not that i wouldnt rather be skiing up north this weekend, but that isnt in the cards. I feel like christmas is coming very early this year. Almost like thankschristmas.

I know what you mean Pat. It's nice to have such an awesome option so close by. :spread:

Not too ridiculous when you consider that Sundown is your home mountain, and it's opening early with moguls! I would even go so far as to say moguls more ligit than what you found at Killington! Hell I'm excited and I live two hours away! Not easy finding bumps this close to home!

pictures later this morning for updates on AZ's trail and the new cat getting a work out.

"AZ's trail" Ha! I love it. Thanks so much for the pic and updates during the snowmaking and grooming process. Sunday calls for a rad November Sundown AZ Vid, me thinks... ;)

Greg,

A second option to build a bump course doesn't require a time consuming groomer. You will need some stubbies, rope, two drills and a minimum two people. You will need just under an hour to set all the stubbies and about 2 hours to ski the lines in, in semi soft conditions. I have built courses both ways and they both work fine but using the stubbie method is less man power less time working and more time skiing. The most important thing is to be consistent with the spacing, and the skier must first start skiing into each stubbie with the boot to the stubbie not the tail of the ski to the stubbie you will need experience skiers to do this not beginners.

As for the spacing I would give you the measurements but it's top secret, just kidding. I do not have them with me and it's been six months since I have built a course so I forget the measurements and I do not want to tell you the wrong measurements. The measurements are very important.

If you are ever at Hunter and see any coaches building a bump course (usually we try and start early like 8:00) come and introduce yourself.

Later,
Creeky Knees
Greg

I've skied that stretch on Broadway with those stubbie bumps. Same with the course on Ike. Lots of fun, but I would call them more "sweeping" moguls than a tight zipper. The Sundown bumps usually set up pretty tight within a week or so of skier traffic. Plus, since the piles the groomers set up are like concrete, there's very little chance of less skilled skiers wrecking the lines.

That's because you're a gaper. Just ask anyone on K-zone.

What in the world is a sweeping mogul, is that dust free............

Ha. Tough to tell in this pic, but Ike had sweeping moguls this day:

Hard to explain. Kind of more C shaped troughs vs. straighter troughs.

These bumps are more rounded than we would like, but I would call this a zipperline bump run. This is what happens when you have skiers ski into each stubbie with the tails of the ski and not the mid part (the boot) of the ski. Keep in mind this was built on Saturday morning and we are skiing on this by 11:00 am. What do you think of the bumps in the photo attached.

Agreed! Sundown dudes, this is really awesome of all of involved. I could kiss you guys! Thanks so much for listening to our requests and our gripes and accommodating both with such humility and stride. Tim really does have beer - just let us know where to direct it!

Hard to really tell, but it looks good to me. I'm sure the stubbie approach works great; certainly not questioning its effectiveness.

they look good to me. but i havent found very many i dont like.

I know what greg is saying. I skied Ike a few years ago with these guys and it had been cut, i assume using the stubbie method. The lines were fantastic and true but the troughs really were cut at a sharp angle. It can change the way you ski a line but still, they were awfully damn good.

quick digression from temptor bumps... regarding gunny bumps:
* when ?
* it won't be side to side, right?

if gunny has a few lines going down the side i'll be grinning ear to ear.. my kids don't like the bumps much so i can't ski temptor when i ski with them. if gunny has groomed and bumped "lanes" i can ski with my kids and ski bumps, at the same time :-D

Let's also not forget, the plan is that we'll get half of Gunny and Nor'easter in the spring! [post="286991"]Click.[/post]

This season we plan to bump up Temptor and the right side of Exhibition as soon as there is enough snow to support bumps. After race season ends (3rd wk of Feb.) we will seed bumps on Gunbarrel skier's right. After the Gunbarrel bumps are skied in, we will flatten Temptor and bump up Nor'easter. The Exhibition bumps will go away for a couple of weeks, mid season, and return in late February.

This plan gives some variety to our mogul offerings and gives skiers and riders that don't like bumps a chance to use Nor'easter and Temptor in their groomed state. Having three distinctly different bump runs should create a nice atmosphere for the late season bump competition.

Bump mania this spring! 3 runs of bumps at a place the size of Sundown is impressive.

Thanks Greg.. sounds like a great plan.

find one comment odd-

any idea why? seems strange to me. those bumps are a great playground for people just getting started.
