BUT... with rain showers mixed in you won't see too many resorts trying to make snow during the 3-6 hour window of mid to low 20 temperatures. Too much moisture in the air for snow making to work efficiently.
I guess I'm the pessimist (maybe realist ;-) )

BUT... keep in mind, where you see rain in the forcast, the temps are close to freezing and that could translate to snow in the mountains ;) Dude, don't rain on my vacation :smash: :snow:

even if there is snow in the mountains, we are not looking at much for accumulation. realistic expectations are in order here, folks. temps are favorable for evening snow making only and snow melt and skier traffic wear will occur during the afternoons most days even during this "cold snap." maybe we get a few more trails for the weekend. we are still looking at most ski areas in new england remaining closed and the big boys running at no more than 25% open at most locations, most less than that.

Trying to stay positive!!! this forcast is decent, still slightly above avg for the sugarloaf/rangeley area but good for a week of nearly non stop snowmaking in the far north. and the local meterologists here in portland are saying that there will be several shots at some snow for next week, and this saturday could be snow for the mountains

dont give up yet!!! its technically still autumn:wink:

Thats right I'm bringing it back. With the prospect of having temps in the 50's this weekend. I have about had it. I had a great day at Jay last weekend but that looks like the last good day we will have until possibly the middle of the month.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/WEATHER/01/04/warm.winter.ap/index.html

"The Earth is recalibrating itself: Last year, we had a cold winter, and it's balancing itself out now. In January, it feels like the middle of April."

It was a "cold winter" in New York last year that needs to be balanced out this year?

In fact, the Plains have been hit by back-to-back blizzards in the past two weeks.
Crap like this in major news sources make people think that because there is a couple of storms somewhere that everything is okay (the mountains of CO actually got next to nothing). A lot of times huge snow falls mean warm moist air masses are dumping their load. A lot of that snow in the high plains will probably be melted within the next few weeks.

This year has made last year look good. At least there was a base this time last year, and most resorts had all of their runs open. It's way past frustrating, I wish I had the dough to fly out west and ski, I just don't and it's getting depressing looking at a prediction of 63 on Saturday with rain.

I just feel like screaming at the sky
WHAT THE )#$(_#_$)( IS GOING ON?!?!?!?!:uzi:
IT'S JANUARY FFS!!!!:angry::angry::angry::angry:

Sorry, just needed to get that off my chest. It's so damned depressing. There is a small light at the end of the tunnel, it looks like after Monday, temps are dropping and it's going to be winter (for a while anyway)

Hey quit complaining and get out there to ski! You're not helping the mountains by not patronizing them when they need the business. It will be spring skiing all weekend so get out there and enjoy it. I am getting sick of reading all these threads about global warming and no snow. Get out there and ski what there is! Sorry for the rant. Think :snow:
Enjoy what there is anyways. It is better than sitting in front of your computer bit#$&ng about it. There, I am done.

Geez Terry, stop reading this thread if it annoys you. He's gotta vent somehow, since murder still appears to be illegal in all 50 states ;-)

I'd love to get out there and ski, however, I'm just getting my skills back after several years absence, and skiing on ice isn't condusive to re-learning the skills, only busting my butt on the slopes.
I have 3 trips planned this month and 4 next month, to me that's a pretty good year of skiing, and next year, hopefully I'll get a season pass someplace to really push my self out the door and on the slopes.
Current temp in Marlborough, MA...57 degrees, tomorrow, projected 64...

The extended forecast for Central New England, while cooling down early next week looks warm for MLK weekend:

...RECORD WARMTH AND LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL TO CLOSE OUT FIRST WEEK
OF 2007 IN SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND...

.SYNOPSIS...
THE UNSEASONABLY MILD AIR LOOKS TO TAKE A BRIEF BREAK EARLY NEXT
WEEK...BUT SHOULD RETURN BY LATE NEXT WEEK. AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE OF
HIGH PRESSURE WILL BRIEFLY BUILD INTO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ALLOWING
AN EAST COAST TROUGH TO DEVELOP. NEXT TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY SHOULD
SEE TEMPERATURES MORE SEASONABLE FOR EARLY JANUARY...ALTHOUGH THEY
STILL MAY AVERAGE A BIT ABOVE NORMAL.

A DEEP TROUGH DEVELOPING OVER THE WESTERN U.S. WILL ALLOW A SURGE OF
ARCTIC AIR TO INVADE MONTANA AND THE DAKOTAS LATE NEXT WEEK. IN
RESPONSE...THE SHORT LIVED TROUGH ALONG THE EAST COAST WILL RAPIDLY
BE PUSHED EASTWARD AND REPLACED BY ANOTHER UPPER LEVEL RIDGE.
THEREFORE...WE EXPECT A RETURN TO THE UNSEASONABLY MILD WEATHER BY
LATE NEXT WEEK.

don't trust it. Shift means "shifting closer to normal." not "shifting to epic mid-season conditions.
It's a bare bones year...just get used to it and take what we get.

Closer to normal is good as long as it is consistent. Ski areas with elevation in northern New England do not need below average temps. Below average temps actually ussually hurt them because it is so dry(except for upslope). Slightly above average consistent temps with a lot of storms would be awesome. Yes, it will be terrible for any ski are in southern or maybe middle New England, but right now I just want good conditions anywhere. I would rather ski powder at Wildcat, Stowe, Jay, Cannon, etc. than Wawa or Sunapee.

We need some snow and cold down south as well as in the mountains to get the people in the larger cities to start thinking about skiing and winter again. It's important to get the skier visits back up so the areas have the people to justify the snowmaking/operating expense.
