We need some snow and cold down south as well as in the mountains to get the people in the larger cities to start thinking about skiing and winter again. It's important to get the skier visits back up so the areas have the people to justify the snowmaking/operating expense.

I'm quite selfish as of now so that just seems better to me. Less skiers the better, and by the time we get into feb. if there isn't enough snow to ski on natural snow terrian and glades I think it is just time to give up. I really don't think I can stand any more groomed man-made snow days. I'm not trying to be a jerk at all, but I just don't understand why everyone is hyper-sensitive about ski areas losing money.

At this point, I'm just excited that the local resorts, southern PA and West Virginia, finally turned their guns back on for the first time in exactly a month for most of them. Some of the resorts in southern PA have been closed for 3 weeks.

I'm hyper-sensitive about local businesses going under..

Right, a couple more winters like this one and you'll start losing those southern ski resorts. That will hurt the northern resorts too as the number of new skiers will shrink, as most people get their starts on the local hill.

Even the biggest ski area supports a local populous...

Actually, it's pretty much exactly that simple.

Austin and Steve don't care about the business end of it...they'd be happy if there were no lifts or infrastructure and few if any skiers.

I submit that if their dreams were to come true that they might want to get ready to ski on 2x4's duct taped to their hiking boots, 2 equal length sticks for poles, and animal skins for warmth. Because the rest of the ski industry like equipment and clothing manufacturers would have no reason to make anything ski related, so they would go out of business too.

That of course assumes there would be ANY snow to ski on without snowmaking.

But the lift tickets would be very cheap.

LMFA. Jim your a funny bastard. I do see Austin and Steve liking the purist side. I just like lifts and and snow man made or natural. I'll take what I can get.

I like the purist side too.

But there are certain realities we all have to live with. At least here in the east.

I half just wanted to get some responses from my comment about not caring about ski areas going under, and I half meant it. Sadly though right now I care more about good skiing then ski area infrastructure. It would probably have a totally different opinion though if I lived in ski town or had family/frieds who were affected by it. (On another note: I personally find what is happening in Berlin NH way more saddening then losing a few ski areas and probably affects way more peoples lifes then a ski area)

Also, about snowmaking, grooming, etc. I really don't care that much about it, I just like skiing on natural snow way more even if the coverage is horrible. Its not about being more rad or core or anything, heck I would guess that I'm in the bottom 50% of skiers here, its just that I love natural snow skiing even if it is more of "adventure" skiing then good skiing half the time.

Nope. Winter is still off. It's gonna stop snowing any minute now. We've got about a foot but Ullr definitely doesn't have the balls to give us another 2 feet :flame:

This, like the moon landing is just a studio production. I would advise that everyone do themselves a favor and stay away from the slopes. I will take a ride up this weekend just to investigate this scam that has obviously been created by a suffering ski industry. I will report back on Monday. Please stay home.

Austin, if the resorts don't make any money, we don't get to ski. It may not be quite that simple, but business is business.

When they closed down Tom some years ago my friends bought a skidoo and just took turns riding everyone up the mountain and skiing down... Given the cost of lift tickets these days, the cost of the skidoo would pay itself off in a week... close em down!!!
