This is nuts. I can recall falls without much snow until December, but not falls in which we have record warmth at this time.

4 points to NEK for the gratuitous Spaceballs reference.

In other news, the wind almost blew me off my deck last night.

C'mon, this is New England people. If we should be used to anything right now, it should be abnormal weather. Abnormal is the norm.

Was that self produced wind? Because if it was that's pretty darn impressive!

Ahahaha.... actually no. And it wasn't from the cows either. It was actually the weather.

And I knew it was windy too when I got in my house. I know this because my bathroom sink told me so.

God, that is beautiful...

At this rate, that chair probably has more snow on it than we will get all season :)

And the worst part is that those folks are probably  and  that they get that much snow. What a shame.

That was also the fall when VT got those record floods. Interesting. Anyone know what the winter of '27-28 was like???

I know that 1927 was a horrific year for flooding in Vermont with a tropical storm hitting on Novemer 2-4 killing more than 50 people in the Winooski Valley. The storm was followed by very cold weather and snow that complicated clean up efforts.

Looking at some weather data from Alaska the fall of 1927-1928 ranks 6th warmest on record for Fairbanks. Lake Erie remained ice free during February of 1928.

November of 1927:

December 1927:

January 1928:

February 1928:

Just by poking around the country 1927-1928 looks warm and wet ( possible El Nino?)

Well you people asked for this weather information and here it is. Any thoughts, suggestions? Should we sacrifice a meteorologist to apease the winters gods?

From the maps it looks like the 1927-28 winter was actually near normal temp wise. November was initially warm (tropical storm) then cold. Then it looks like it evened out. I would take normal at this point. However, it is also hard to tell even at on a monthly timeframe whether it was a good snow season. As we all know it only takes ONE day of high temps and rain to really srcew up a good snowpack. And that one day won't throw off the monthy avergae significantly.

It HAS to cool off eventually. :snow:

So, weather from almost 80 years ago has an impact on this year? That is a stretch.

dont forecast models tend to be based on similar situations from years past? Not short term but when looking at seasonal forecasts, i believe they do use past years with similar meteorlogical setups.

or at least that's sorta how i understand it.
