HUNTER - A freak accident involving a large snow blower claimed the life of a Prattsville man working at the Hunter Mountain ski resort, police said on Tuesday.
State police at the Catskill barracks said Walter Rion, 63, a shop mechanic at Hunter, was closing a garage door in the ski center's maintenance area about 8:30 p.m. Monday when his clothes got caught in the moving blades of a 6-foot-wide snow blower that was in the shop for repairs. Rion was pulled into the machine and suffered fatal injuries, police said.
Rion was pronounced dead at the scene by Greene County Coroner Hassan Basagik. An autopsy was scheduled for today at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.
Rion, of 105 Marv Rion Road, Prattsville, worked at Hunter Mountain for more than 20 years, police said.
They said the ski resort was closed for the day when the accident occurred and that Rion was working alone in the shop, which was not uncommon.
The maintenance shop is at the bottom of the mountain, away from the public part of the ski center police said. They said the snow blower was an industrial-size, two-stage machine that is driven rather than pushed.
Hunter Mountain officials could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.
condolences to all who knew him.
