probably why I never got into snowboarding. I got a Burton Elite 150 for Christmas in 1985. There were very few resorts that allowed snowboarding at the time. We had season passes at Okemo, but my folks took me to Magic a few days to learn. You had to take a lesson and be "certified" to ride the upper mountain lifts.

I snowboarded a few times a year until about 1990, but the combination of the equipment sucking so bad and my love for skiing moguls made the sport never really catch on for me.

It was an interesting time. I remember the discrimination going both ways. When Okemo first allowed snowboards, all the skiers were upset. Then when they built their first half pipe, the snowboarders wouldn't allow skiers in it for a couple of years because they claimed skiers would ruin the pipe. I used to poach it all the time and get yelled at by ski patrol and snowboarders alike.

on our senior ski trip some friends and i rented boards one day at sugarbush in 1990 for shits n giggles and i really liked it. as a then-skateboarder it seemed like it was easy to get up and running to the point where i could have fun and get down most blues only slamming the back of my head a couple times on each run

for money/geography/lifestyle reasons i did not get back on snow for another 10 years, and when i did i just kind of defaulted back to skiing

89 or 90 I tried boarding with my Raichle Flexons on a carving board with hard plates. Only lift was a T-Bar. Somehow managed to survive it and link some turns by the end.

I went down a sledding hill on a snowboard once. Went completely out of control and wiped hard. Many of my friends skateboarded and were naturals on a snowboard. I was not a good skateboarder and was much better on inlines and hockey skates. So skis clicked for me.

I have nothing against snowboarders. I wish I was better on a board because it does look like a blast.

I can't skate and I can't snowboard well either. Tried it once and spent a lot of the time on my butt.

Skiing is too much fun I never really saw the point or investment to make the switch. But I have a cousin and a couple friends who absolutely slay the slopes on the board and it's a fun time trying to keep pace.

Since we are detailing how we started snowboarding here is my story

Strapped on a snowboard in 1988 for the first time. Went to the top of Bretton Woods, linked turns halfway down, declared myself an expert.
Went home from said trip, I was in HS at the time, and told my parents I wanted a snowboard, they told me to get lost they just spent $500 on ski gear. I didn't touch a snowboard again until early 2000's when I crashed and broke my skis (not the same ones from 1988!). Said F it and went to the darkside. None of my friends snowboarded at the time and they all thought I was nuts. I now want to ski more but the board is too much fun. I usually ski now on days when conditions are not great, nothing beats a POW day on a board, well nothing you do standing up at least.

That's what my snowboard friends have told me. They say once you pass a certain point you can improve very quickly.

My girlfriend from Puerto Rico has only 1 day on skis last year and she was really good for first time.

I'm telling her now maybe think about snowboarding instead. Cuz she can surf a little, and like, opposites attract, right?

I thought the same thing...
i think it's easier for a snowboarder to learn surfing than the transverse...

Maybe. Although a snowboard handles more like a skateboard than a surfboard. Unless it's deep!!

One of the greatest feeling in the world is being on a snowboard in Pow...
When you're relaxed and moving you don't even feel the straps on your feet... Only the soles of your feet laying down on the deck..
So gooooood.

I was shredding in the womb. Came out the canal, threw a nice backside five, then never looked back. I did this in Sorel cause the gear sucked at the time and my feet were cold for a bit after the cut off the embilical cord.
