Today I went to the local hill to take a few runs and take advantage of the fresh storm. It is a very small place, Thunder Ridge for the people who know it.
Now they ahd gotten some nice snow out of the storm. Off on the sides of the trail I could find top of the boots, and on the main trails down couple inches in the main line of the trail. On several ocasions during my time their I heard people complaining about the snow....
The comments I heard, "When are they going to pull out the groomers?", "Its too deep lets head on home", but the best one I heard was from the lifty. He was talking to another one of the lifties, "Wow I'm suprised that we are even open and their are people here, the conditions are crap." You work for the mountain, odds are you like to ski so you should love the fresh snow.

Please never complain about fresh snow!!!!!!!

I was at Sugarbush on Monday and spent all day complaining about the 6" of fresh snow they got. I did so much complaining that one of my binding heel pieces ripped right out of the ski. I promptly skied/rolled/slid down on one ski to the car, got the backup pair and complained some more.

People are silly, complaining about snow, especially when the last time we had an actual snow storm of this magnitude was 2 years ago. This storm has probably saved a couple hundred snow dependent businesses from going bust in the VT/NH area.

Bubba was saying yesterday that K gives out more vouchers on a pow day than on a rain or ice day. Sad.

Luckily, it was not the Bros. I was using K2 public enemies given that even with 6" of fresh snow, there were plenty of bare spots and rocks... I had the bros back in the car as a backup pair. I will definitely break the Bros out this weekend though :). Maybe even the powder pluses :)

Some people just don't get it...

Whats worse is when people think the HAVE to enjoy themselves on a POW day...
I bet some of the very people complaining were at the bar later talking about how great it was...

I have a bunch of friends and extended family members, still living in Europe, and every time it snows, they stop skiing. They are solid skiers on groomed terrain, some of them with good racing background, but they don't enjoy and can't ski powder. In some parts of the world, skiing off piste in natural snow conditions has not caught on it seems.

To each his/her own and I usually keep an open mind about it, but what annoys me is people complaining NOW about a snow storm in the North East. Don't they understand how important this storm was in helping ski resorts and businesses dependent on snow stay alive? The tourism business in VT has been suffering badly due to the lack of snow, and this storm is finally going to change that. If you don't like the deep snow conditions, go have a beer or a hot chocolate, come back out tomorrow morning and you will have a bunch of lovely groomers to pizza down :).

Weren't you guys beginners once?

In teaching my twin cousins (now 7) and my girlfriend to ski over the last 3 years, and during my brief stint as an instuctor during college before that, I came to appreciate how difficult even a few inches of snow makes it for beginners to have an enjoyable time.

I also firmly believe that skiing ungroomed trails that no longer hold powder but is chopped up a) can be very fun if skied aggresively but b) is very tiring when skied aggresively. My girlfriend and i are the same size, but she weighs 50 pounds less than me and just doesn't have the frame/musculature/stamina to ski aggresively all day in these conditions.

So don't lambast the beginners or less-strong skiers for expressing difficulty with deep snow conditions. They are just telling the truth.

And it just means more fresh for the rest of us!

True, but most of the people I've heard complaining weren't beginners..

I wouldn't care, if they like to ski groomers I have no problem with that, except they complain to management who in turn mows down a perfectly fun trail... :(

I also think it has to do with pitch, If our mountains here on the east-coast were steeper, then skiing powder is easier because of the greater speed we get. quite honestly, i wouldnt want to do Long John, at mount snow or any other green traverse trail in these conditions, keep it steep so youcan float ontop of the snow...IMHO

As one of those "less-strong" skiers, I don't complain about fresh ungroomed snow, I just look with envy at those who have the skills to enjoy it...

That said, I think that when we get a good powder dump ski areas should still groom the easier terrain if at all possible. Leave the harder terrain alone for those who can appreciate the powder.

Agreed, flat greens are a little hard to get moving on with 2 feet of fresh on them. ;)

I wish there was a way to "tag" these people. Then, if we ever need to improve the gene pool, well...
