Any gardeners out there? When is the best time to transplant trees and plants? I have a small tree I want to transplant and don't know if it is best to do it now or wait until the spring. How about plants?

I've had the best luck when the plant is dormant. Late fall or early winter before the ground freezes. Then in the spring it will acclimate to it's new environment easier than if it was in a growth cycle.

What he said. Depends on the plant, though. Some do better in spring, others better in fall (bulbs, for instance, are better to transplant in the fall).

ETA: I'm not a master gardener but I did work for a mail-order plant company for several years and we were well-instructed in plant care. If in doubt, you could always call one of them and see what they say.

Both !!

The Queen is our green thumb and i'm grunt labor BUT she annually saves ALL our geraniums from four outside planting beds. Then she puts them on a tarp in the cellar for the winter and transpalnts them in the outdoor beds in the spring . BEEN DOING THIS FOR YRS saves big $$$ . I transplant small trees or bushes in BOTH spring and fall . Our location in EXTREME Northern ny is along the Canadian border so our season is short and winter is quite long
