WCAX reported on the new 10th Mountain Division Memorial Statue at Stowe. I'm pretty sure that I saw it earlier this fall, but it is really neat. It was donated by a local family.

Quite a statue.

There's an old Mercury parked on a side street near us with a license plate that says "10 MTN". It hasn't moved in a year or so... imagine the vets are fading fast now

Saw that statue. Pretty cool. They deserve to be recognized. Many of those soldiers left after WWII and were responsible for developing the US ski industry.
We went snowmobiling with Nova Guides at Camp Hale where they trained a few years ago. Awesome area! Did the 1/2 day tour. Expensive, but definitely worth it. http://novaguides.com/index.php

Nice! Statue looks like the poster they sell at the NE Ski Museum.

This probably deserves another thread but I wonder how many Eastern ski areas were actually founded or had help from members of the 10th.

I looked up the 10th Mountain on Wikipedia and it turns out that in some of their battles in Italy in 1945, they were fighting alongside a Brazilian division called the Brazilian Expeditionary Force. I had absolutely no idea that Brazil was an ally of ours and sent troops to fight in WW2. I thought all the South American countries had stayed neutral. What an interesting little corner of history.

One of my great-uncles was a chaplain in 5th Army in the Italian Campaign under Mark Clark. "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!"

A great book on the Italian campaign is *The Day of Battle* by Rick Atkinson. Very well written and lots of detail about how hard the fighting in the mountains was. I can't remember if the 10th Mountain is mentioned specifically -- but it really gives you an idea of what the 10th would have had to face when they went up against the Gothic Line.

Yep we're proud of the 10th here in NNY . there's is a long and distinguished heritage and as has been mentioned they are the founding fathers of many post WW@ ski areas

THEY are based about an hr from here at Fort Drum. I've had the fun of teaching many of the senior staff in various seminars there when i was in the business ,

Great people!!

When I was in Italy our tour went through the Appenine mountains and the guide mentioned the famous battle at Monte Casino where many of the 10th Mt died.
