Somewhere off the beaten path that doesn't do 1 million skier visits per season...Crested Butte and Sun Valley come to mind.

The only place I've been to out west is Utah two years running and going again this season. Hard to beat for snow and within an hour of Salt Lake City, you have 9 resorts, some of which see very little traffic i.e. Solitude and Powder Mountain.

You can always have fun in Summit county CO. or in Whistler, MHO is to try out Alberta, Banff, Kicking Horse (is that eastern BC?) or Tahoe, just a personal feeling I would say.

I think you need to give more details about what you're looking for in your trip and who will be going. Is ski-in-ski-out convenience important or are you willing to drive or ride shuttles to ski? How important is night life, dining, off-slope activities? Do you want lots of challenging off piste or are you looking mostly for lots of groomers? Are you trying to do this on the cheap or do you not care too much about expenses? What time of year are you planning to go? You might take a look at www.skisnowboard.com, it gives quite a bit of useful information that might help guide a choice.
