People will probably hate me for this, but it comes with the disclaimer that you it would be decent midweek: Stratton. Many lifts, excellent grooming (maybe too much though), quite a few trails and pretty quiet.

BUT, it's expensive and isn't terribly challenging (read: Intermediate)...

Smuggs will be the home mountain as usual.
I'd like to hit Jay a couple times.

Bolton for the night skiing....15 bucks a pop if you can go on thursday nights with the corporate ski league stuff. Get your race runs done asap and ski for the rest of the time! I've come to find out that if it's been snowing hard and it is mid-week you tend to have some nice powder runs to yourself at night because there aren't usually that many people up there. Their park ain't that bad either, if you're into that kind of thing.

Burke, w/o a doubt. Not many areas in the country w/ better top to bottom vertical. I like watching the BMA skiers rip down the training slope when I'm riding the chair. Then carving up boarder's left after reaching the top!

Hey 56Fish, how are the woods at Burke? I've been biking at the Kingdom trails in East Burke a bunch this summer/fall and it looked like there might be some good woods up there. I have not skied Burke for quite a few years.

The woods at Burke are excellent as long as we don't have a year like last year :smash:

Here's and example:

ohhhh. that just activated my ski fever. Nice pic. That looks similar to the woods I was scoping a few weeks ago while biking...they looked nicely spaced and with a good slope.

Question for the Burke folks:
I stay at the camp grounds above Burke ski area for biking trips to the Kingdom trails in the summer and fall. Do people tend to camp there during the winter too? Are the bathroom&shower facilities up and running?

the toll road upto the campground isn't plowed during the winter to the best of my knowledge, so you would have to hike in to do any boot leg camping. the woods at burke certainly are some of the best around.... when there is snow.

Any of you Burke regulars care to give up a board-friendly (hate to skate - coming back from the east side can be wearing) woods line or, two? I would guess they change w/ storm direction? I'll give up some of my "hidden-in-plain-site" lines here at 7 Springs!

No and no. The campground is a summer activity and the facilities are not open. I will say that you are near the good glades...though I'm sure that you saw the goods.

As for Burke, usually I am more excited to promote them and usually they are really good about talking with us. But I know that some are really, really disappointed in their silence on the AZ Challenge Questions submitted now four months ago or so. Hoping we get something back....I like it when folks get stoked about my home mountain.

And yes, Middlebury IS worth the visit (when there is snow). Did I mention it is cheaper this season for Alums to ski?

The Snow Bowl, as TB said, is worth checking out. Not only do alums get cheaper tickets this year, so does everyone. $25 full day ticket.

Steve, I have to meet you up ther esome day. I couldn't find the glades; everything was so dense where I was skiing. Only a couple chutes.

:daffy:
there are glades and tree shots everywhere, but they are not in obvious places and can be easily missed. if you come up mid-week this season let me know!
