Me and a buddy are gonna make our first snowboarding trip of the season this friday. What do you guys reccommend? Where are the best conditions? Who's got the most open, ridable terrain?

Im open to anything within a 8 hour drive of NYC.

I was hoping to get advice from people who've actually rode the mountains in the past few days, rather then from the weathermen. From what Ive been reading, some places still need a few good storms to really get going, even though the stats look decent.

just looking for some friendly advice buddy!

What kind of conditions and open terrain are you looking for? Groomers, trees, bumps, natural trails??

You are casting an awful broad net here....maybe narrow it down to at least one or two states. And right now I'd say at least Central Vermont northwards, depending on how much snow we get from this upcoming storm.

just chiming in for you my friend

stay away from lower vermont, they have crap for snow, they had a real tough time during that last warmup, if you want to journey to nh youll find plenty of trails and action in NH,

if you make it to maine the resorts up here are doing very well, sunday river is around 100 + trails, sugarloaf is dissapointing and is mostly icy, saddle back which is SUPER far from you is killer snow right now but cold temps

hope this helps!

Groomers, OK. What are "natural" trails?

Based on that, you could still almost go anywhere and have a decent time. If you want an easier resort with terrain that skis well, and has good conditions regardless of what falls from the skies, you can look to the usual suspects..Stratton, Okemo, Sunday River come to mind.

But again, your criteria is "northeastern ski resort with groomers." If I typed that into a hypothetical search engine, I'd get too many hits. Narrow it down...what resorts have you liked? What have you not liked? Are you on a budget?

I would recommend SR - even with all the wind this past week they have recovered nicely and will be out touching up the snow w/ guns and a natural blast tomorrow into Friday. They always do a great job..

I cant wait to go back to Sunday River. I went there 2 years ago for my bachelor party. They got a ton of snow the night we got there. Unfortunatley that same night I got tackled by one of my friends and fractured a bunch of ribs. Spent what should have been my first day of riding in Rumsford Hospital. I tried to ride the next day, but all the Vicodin in Maine couldnt supress the pain enough to even pretend like I was having fun.

I think Im gonna save Sunday River for a 3 or 4 day trip this year. We rented this awesome house called the Enchanted Dome. I'd like to do that again. Minus the trip to the ER.

How's Okemo looking so far??? its a little closer and Ive never been there. I like new adventures.

I'd go to Whiteface . . . Long uninterrupted runs, lots of vertical, Good bars in downtown Lake Placid. Plus, they're supposed to get hit pretty well with this storm (I think).

I'd recommend Gore, but it SUCKS for snowboarding.

Looks like it's totally going to depend on tommorow.

If you like rolling groomers you will be very happy at Okemo.

At the moment, Killington is nothing but groomers. Midweek, the surface holds up pretty much all day. On weekends, much of it is a mess by noon from the traffic. Okemo has all those nearly identical trails so the traffic gets spread out among them more evenly on weekends.

Mad River is completely closed at the moment so that gives you an idea of what Sugarbush is like. They don't have the water or compressor/pump capacity to fix the mountian quickly after a thaw. As of today, you want a place with a big snowmaking system.

You really should wait until this storm goes through. That could change things dramatically. It will take 8" of heavy snow to fix the natural snow terrain at Killington and 2 or 3 feet to get it really good. If anybody gets 100% snow from this storm and gets a pretty good dump, you want to go there.

I guess I'll wait and see what this storm brings.

So far it looks like Whiteface, northern VT, NH and ME are supposed to get the most accumulation.

It sucks, I was supposed to be packing for Tahoe right about now.... then the economy took a big poo on my plans.

Went out there last year. they got 12 feet of snow in one week. right before we got there. words cant describe how much fun that was. rode 5 mountains in 6 days. Kirkwood, Heavenly, Squaw Valley, Northstar and Sierra-at-Tahoe. Ice?? whats that? nothing but powder. and the view from every part of every mountain was right out of some National Geographic shit. Just driving to the mountains was incredible.

ok, Im gonna go cry for a bit

was that 8 hours each way or round trip? you can go pretty far to escape the crappy weather if you are willing to drive that much.

go to sugarloaf-they are so far north and east that they seem immune to this latest winter thaw. it;s exactly 452 miles from my door in NYC which translates to about 7 1/2 hours. their snow report sounds pretty good too.

or you could try sunday river.
