What's your Foliage Report?

IMO, a better leading indicator of winter weather ahead (vs. Weather reports) are the leaves turning.

Opened the shade and found the first cluster of maple leaves turned overnight here in the flatlands. Farther west, along Rte 2A saw several trees well on their way.

I don't understand. Are you saying they are turning early? My understanding is that the colors are not supposed to be as good as other years due to the plentiful rain this summer.

I have my own theory that the amount of acorns that come down correlate to the winter weather and the squirrels and wind have been busy already here in NW Jersey.

I just have the feeling we're gonna have a decent winter. If the storm track is coming up the coast like it seems it wants to do lately, thats a nice track for noreasters and those are the best winters.

Oh, this is just a cloaked snow stoke thread. :blink: We always have early leaf changes. Yes, I see leaves turning, just not the entire tree. A few here and there. I'll go for the hype since the "meteorolgists" can't get it right As an engineer by training, the "supposed tos" are just that. I need stoke :-D Just about to pull the trigger on another pair of boards; need something to justify the purchase
You should start an acorn thread too, so we can have regional reportage. Maybe we can develop a new prognostication that beats NWS, crapuweather and Farmer's Almanac.

Still pretty green down here, but we've still had a lot drop already. Not sure why, but I've had a few MTB rides where the trails were starting to feel fall like with all the leave on the trail.

Ever been hit in the head by a falling acorn, pointy side down? Hurts like hell :-x
Yeah, I just raked a whole bunch of them. We've got a lot of pinecones locked and loaded for the drop. Freakin' bad - not that they hurt, they are full of tree sap that gets all over you. Picked up about 6 dozen last weekend.
Trying to get the yard work done so when the snow flies I have a ticket to run.....:flag:

driving from VT to NH on Sunday saw a fair amount of color with swamp maples, but that's about it. Hoping for early foliage around the Lakes. Would be nice for my wedding on the 26th.

Aside from the 1 sugar Maple in my side yard that is suffering from "root wrap" and is distressed and slowly dieing, I'm still about 99.8% green at my house.

Even up in VT last weekend at Mount Snow, just some very slight, isolated color changes of random trees all the way upto the summit.

I've seen acorns put dents in the top and hoods of cars. My theory extends from the fall of 1993. After a summer not too dissimilar to this past summer an unbeliveable amount of acorns came down. The following winter was one of the best with good deep snow cover throughout the northeast.

Another hopeful natural sign for this winter comes from our male cat. Last season he put on wieght(noticeable) as winter approched. After the good cold snap we had in January he lost the wieght again. Suddenly this August he has started bulking up again.
