I hear wildcat has $9 lift tickets tomorrow. Otherwise I would hit Sunday River. Appear to have the most recent semi-significant snow accumulations, while still debatably in the day trip range (for me at least).

Yeah, they have their anniversary deal tomorrow. $9. Wildcat Anniversary Weekend they call it. I heard it is a MOB scene on deal day but I am still curious enough to possibly check it out.

BLR - I'm amazed someone out there grabbed that. I'm an original Pad Thai person myself. PT II was just getting started last time I spent any time around there. How do you know it?

justjen - Sunday River has $50 lift tickets tomorrow in celebration of their 50th year....

smellytelle - You are correct, the trip from Jay to Concord is way shorter than Saddleback to Concord. But, I'm starting from Boston, so it's only true at the end of the day. I read the TR on Jay and it didn't sound particularly enticing right now. I think I need to follow the snow.

So... it comes down to this. I think, based upon what was said below that I could make SB in 4:15 if I push it a bit - I'll have to stop at least once on the way up and I'll 68 - 72 on the highway (I bought a diesel, stopped doing 80, and get 44m.p.g. on my ski trips. Not preaching, I swear - I just have more money to ski with now :spread:)

I've looked at the TR on SB and everything on Casa and I think I can find some stuff to ski there. Any thoughts on the less densely tree'd areas? If there is enough snow though, it really doesn't matter! Any glades other than Casablance you'd recommend? Good warm up cruisers?

It's going to be a game time decision when I get near 26. If I manage to hit the road early without mysteriously losing 20 minutes getting myself out the door and the weather reports for SB hold up, I may make the haul. I think I can be out the door by 5 and there and on the mountain by 10 which would be awesome.

I'm gonna take another look at TRs...

Thanks!

We almost have you to Saddleback MattGoose!

Here is a gameplan you can consider:

1. Take the Rangeley chair up and Take Gray Ghost down first. Great Blue warm-up "rip the cord" Crusier. Don't worry about losing first tracks in the glades. Plenty of snow.

2. Take Rangeley chair up again and ski Green Weaver. Look for the lower nightmare glade on your left. Ski this glade as a good warmup. When you hit the Pass crosscut, ski over to the quad.

3. At the top of the Quad hang a left and trek to Casablanca. Don't get discouraged about the traverse. Its long but it is worth it! There are 4 marked entry spots. Get over to #4 as it is a bit more wide open and great to start with.

4. After you wonder in amazement after your first Casablanca run, go up the quad and do it again. Try drop in #1 or #2 for something a little tighter if you want.

5. Then just start working your way along the trails from skiers right to skiers left. Hit Black Beauty and Frostbite. Don't worry if the first section is scratchy. Tons of snow when you get down into it a bit.

6. Tight Line is a nice wide open black crusier. Supervisor is fun as well.

7. By this time you should be ready for more glades. Take Intimidator and Nightmare... both can be accessed from the top off Tri-Color.

8. By this time you are probably going to be wiped out. Finish off by ripping some great cruisers off the Rangeley. Blue Devil, Royal Coachman are great. If you are up for it Pechy's Peril, Golden Smelt and Parmacheenee Bell are great bump runs off the Rangeley Chair.

But whatever you do... have fun! We expect a trip report!

I don't think that is right for Saddleback. Saddleback website reports 10 inches Since Monday. Regardless, wherever you go in Maine it will be good.

Magic Mountain. $39.00 lift tickets. Been closed since Monday. Should be nice. I will be there! Same drive time as Okemo (2.5 hours) route 2 to 91 to 103 to 11.

2 other glades to consider: If you liked the tight stuff hit Dark Wizard. It is most likely open from the top of the Kennebego Quad, your 1st left.

Also one off the beaten track a bit is Thrombosis. It's off Colonel Bates (which is off Peachy's Peril). Have fun!

So, I'm stoked for Saddleback.

That itinerary covers everything that I need, thank you very much Salsgang.

I'm hoping that since SR and the loaf got some decent snow, SB did too. I think they reported pretty accurately with that huge storm, which would be a great time to embellish (can you imagine a 40" snow?!?). I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I don't know if I can post from my BB, but I'll find out tomorrow. Camera is coming either way.

Here's to getting up early, and getting straight out of the house!

Thanks very much for all the input. I may not have internet access all weekend, so it might be awhile, but I'll be back.

Here's to a sunny weekend!

The Waterville detour adds about 30 minutes, if I didn't do that and did this what's the drive through northern NH like? Anything to see?
Route 16 from Berlin to Erol has some of New England's worst frost heaves. Really slows down the drive. I haven't done it in about three years... I started going Route 2 to Mexico and then north even though it added 20 minutes "Google Maps Time" but in reality it was about the same time and less wear and tear on the car. Perhaps 16 is better now but it was horrendous the one time I drove that way. A LOT of airborne time.

Sal gives a great itinerary. My thoughts...

+1 on Grey Ghost as a warm up as well as making sure you get to Black Beauty and Frostbite. The snow after the first 100 feet or so is great. (and, if you stay to the edges, it can be deep)

Thrombosis Glades were a lot of fun also. Pretty spaced out and hardly anyone had skied them.

Make sure you check out Parmachenee Belle. It is an ungroomed blue that is a lot of fun and can get some massive soft bumps. Nothing too tough but a lot of fun.

Drive safely tomorrow and enjoy Saddleback. Take some pics and post a TR for us

Oh, and about Pad Thai 2...it is one of my "go to" restaurants in Waterville. I was doing some contract work at Colby a few years ago and the owners son was in the group. He used to bring us a few bits and pieces here and there. It was delicious.

The other place to check out is Cancun. It is in downtown Waterville near the Purple Unicorn. The waitstaff is all mexican and the food is simple and delicious. Not overly fancy and you should prepare for "Pedro's Revenge" on the way home but it is well worth it. I highly recommend the Carnitas Plate.

Wow, good for you day tripping Saddleback. You're in for an awesome treat. I went for the first time Saturday and just skied glades all day. As for a comparison between Casablanca and SR glades I would say the #4 glade is a little tighter than Blind Ambition but as steep as Celestial or Flying Monkey. #3 gets a little tighter but on far skiers left it turns into a narrow chute. #'s 1&2 Are tighter, and if I recall correctly #1 turns into a tight chute on skiers left too. Casablanca does feel more remote than anything you'll find on the map at SR.

The other glades I skied were Nightmare Glades, the top section wasn't really a glade and kinda thin coverage but really fun none the less. The snow this week might have freshened it up. The bottom section was awesome. Intimidator was a lot like the bottom part of Nightmare Glades.

Have fun and I look forward to the trip report.

Taught two new skiiers to stop, make their wedge turns, link them, and ride the lift.

Not a bad weekend.

I'll post a full TR with pictures, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone who talked me into making the Saddleback trip - it was worth every minute in the car.

Popped awake at 440, in the car and on the road by 93N by 5. Hit Grey by 6:50 and figured there was no better day to make the SB trip and passed on SR.

If you hustled without traffic, and didn't really stop. I think you could comfortably do it in 4 hours and change. I was there and on the mountain by 10:15, which was fine. Followed salsgang's script pretty closely, but ended up with a bunch of "one more" runs through Thrombosis and Nightmare long after my quads had had enough :)

The laps through Casablanca was the closest thing I've ever come to real backcountry skis. It is some work to get all the way over to gate 4, and after a slightly tight entrance, it opens way up. Traversed all the way across to the 1 marker and about half way back through to 4 before popping out at the end. Trees varied from probably a 5 - 6 ft cut out to 12ft+ in some of the naturally more open areas. Took another lap down 1 and then 2 - they are definitely tighter for longer than 4, but all of them seem to open up after a while.

On my last CB lap, I ducked in just before gate 1 into an old set of tracks. Missed where they exited right and spent the next hour or so fighting my way down.

All in all, a really excellent day. Oh, the three things I haven't mentioned yet? The snow, the sun, and the wind? Tons of it. Just tons. I lost my skis in the woods and fell into 30+ inches of snow - almost up to my waist. Probably from 6 to 12 of really new stuff. And all of it was as light and fluffy as I've ever seen out here. It was sunny and clear all day. Trees were too covered in snow to let much light in though. And not a hint of wind.

Call it a true 1 in 100 day.

Woo Hoo! Good for you for making the trip. I am glad you enjoyed it! I was at Sugarloaf all weekend and while I had a blast - I missed Saddleback. Sounds like you hit it on a gem of a day with fantastic conditions!
