Ski sawmill in PA for me. However my day was cut short due to my friend trying to take on a tree. He got a free ride on the back of a snowmobile.

First Time Skiing?

I lived in a refugee camp in the Austrian Alps for the first five years of my life. The camp was nestled up against the mountains (It had originally been a logging camp.) approximately 20km from Innsbruck. My older cousin made me a pair of wooden skis with leather straps, and either dragged or carried me at times up the lower slopes of the mountain behind the camp. That was in 1949 and I was three years old at the time.

Now that's one hell of a start!

I'm very anxious for that place to open again. Never have skied it while in operation, but did hike for some turns one day while on our way to Whiteface. Can see where that place is bunches of fun.

Doing any resort developement in the AP is probably harder than getting thru Act 250 in Vermont. My family owned a resort on Lake George for many years. After the AP was established my father and the APA butted heads several times. You own a place for many years and then you wake up one morning and you have to deal with a mountain of new rules. It mostly had to do with signage.

Oh yeah i agree its the worst kind of governmental contol borders on zealotry.Environmental issues are extremely important but should not stiffle controlled sensible growth that enhances an areas demographic and economic profile.

Big Tupper WAS a SUPER nice place to ski a really fun mountain with , beautiful scenery. It now has gone to seed as a result footdragging neanderthals who want to CONTROL every aspect of the PEOPLES park--give me a break !! Tupper lake as a community is languishing and needs a real infusion of sensible and sustainable development

Agree. I'm sure most if not all biz owners in Tupper Lake are ready for this, no?? Is the main hold up the new condo's the're projecting?? Can't imagine re-opening an already exsisting ski area could be the cause of such delay.

First place ever was Sugarbush on a VERY COLD Dec 31 1991. That was my first lesson and we stood around and didn't remember doing much. Started going for real a few weeks later at Powder Ridge in CT. After a few lessons I was good to go. Started boarding in the late 90s at Okemo. Needless to say, today, my two favorite mountains are Okemo and Sugarbush, the latter my new home mtn. And I even put a few years "on the clock" at Powder Ridge 2001/2002 era, before I moved up north.

I started skiing down snow covered roads in Sussex County, NJ.

Then went to actual ski areas - Craigmeur & Great Gorge.

My backyard hill around 1981-ish

First ski "area" was the mighty Powder Ridge in Middlefield, CT, in 1982

surprised that no one has replied with Blue Hills, MA - that was mine back around '75. town ski lessons after school. interestingly, scanning the replies - two Colby Ski Hill, now a lost ski area, anyone care to comment on the area? BTW: didn't post a report but I went to the Boston ski show and spoke with the new operator of Blue Hills, they have a 5 year lease, rebuilt the chair, improved snow-making. they own/operate something about 18 miles outside of nyc in NJ. good luck!
