Royal Mountain, NY in Dec 1963 on wooded skiis, lace up boots and Cubco bindings. A very primitve release binding.
They had a T-bar and a rope tow. Tickets were $4/$2 for the adults/kids and $1 for the rope tow. The season started around X-mas and went into April due to the great NE exposure and narrow trails. I hear they are still going strong.

Wow, never heard of it

I was gonna make a crack about the 550ft vert, but then I'v "skiied" Holiday Mountain at 400..at night, in January, 4 degrees, $50 for the family

We stayed at Villa Roma...now that was an experience

Oh, and what's Roma's vert?

Oh, and to show you how different things are, all of my kids first time out was smuggs

EDIT: Even Roma's web site doen't mention there hill, just that Elk and Holiday are close...close is a relative term

Anyone else skiied that little hill? I wonder if they've ceased operations

First time I had skis on my feet on snow was at Camp Arrowhead in Marlboro, NJ. A YMCA camp that had a rope tow and two trails with probably 150' vertical. That would have been winter of 72 or 73. No longer in existence.

The first time I actually skied was at Vernon Valley/Great Gorge in February 1983. I was back north from vet school in Louisiana and was talked into going with my brother and some friends. Been going strong ever since.

Cranmore. I think it was in 1965 at age 6. I have the 8mm home movie of the event that I keep meaning to send out to get digitized. Lace boots, bamboo poles, wood skis with cable bindings, wool mittens and hat, corduroys, Mighty Mac parka.

Front yard and Toggenberg, NY, Winter 1977. Wooden skis with screw-in metal edges, leather boots, "safety" straps, Cubcos and one-piece snowmobile suit. I wish I kept that set-up, minus the suit. Even then, I knew that fartbags weren't ever going to be cool.

First tele turns were on Secor's Hill, 1983, on xc gear, because they didn't make burly freeheel stuff for kids yet. First snowboard turns were at Toggenberg, 1985, on an old Burton with LL Bean duck boots. Super control.

It was always my experience that Cubcos and Rope Tows did not go well together.:-o

Just to the north of Tog....

is a lost ski area, I believe my first (other than backyard).....Ironwood Ridge. You can still see the liftline and the hint of trails.

This would be about 1966. Am I that much older than you, John ? If so, at least I've never worn a fartbag.....at least that I'll admit to.

Mount Ashland Oregon in 2003 with a college buddy. Got just one day of skiing that year and the number of days have kept increasing since.

My first was Wintergreen in Virginia in around 1995 or 1996 on a snow day that had local schools closed. My dad drove me and two (skier) friends down, and I was on borrowed equipment. I'd never heard of a "wedge" or a "snowplow" and about the only skiing I'd ever seen was on TV during the Olympics, so I didn't know that you shouldn't immediately put your feet together and crouch/tuck down. It's a miracle I didn't get hurt...
