O'Hara was there for that one???

We had a pretty good thing going 2 seasons ago (on a pow day at K...) he's a pow hound, fersure... jealous...

Yeah, John had a much longer leash back then. Once his kids ended up in K programs and he had to drive them to events every weekend, his west trips ended.

Most of Steamboat is pretty intermediate but it's a great place on a powder day. Kinda like how I really like Mt Snow on midweek powder days. I don't need a 40 degree pitch when I can float without touching bottom using powder boards on a nice intermediate pitch. I'm the same way with heli-skiing and off-piste in South America. I like to keep it under 30 degrees so I don't have to worry about it sliding. I had a very different attitude when I was in my 20's and I wanted to defy death on every run.

Actually that ws far from biting your head off - and I really did think it was S/N...

BTW - ever post on TGR??? ;-)

Head biting off was tounge in cheek, hence the geeez. I have very thick skin. Matter of fact I use to post at RSN before they went off. That was verbal combat. I can give as good as I get.

No to TGR, I waste too much time here as it is, plus I here they are a snobby, clicky bunch.

People on this board are in general much easier offended than TGR I have noticed. I thought dumb jokes, teasing and trash talking was part of the game. Claiming that people that like groomers over trees are gaper can't be anything but a joke, but here one haa to preface it with "just kidding" or "no offense" to make sure feelings aren't hurt. Oh well, sarcasm and tone of voice is hard to convey when typing i guess.

Not the people it’s the rules of decorum here are different from TGR and other forums. I’m not saying one is better then another it’s just different and when you’re use to another way it takes getting use to. Mods will tell you nicely to clam it down and if that doesn’t work the thread gets locked.

I’m just explaining not complaining. I obviously like it here alot, it’s a good community.

A? or B?

I would choose A, but it would have to be both steep and deep. I simply have not found that to be the case in the east. I know many AZ'ers claim to ski great tree runs at Jay and MRG. I can't seem to get there at times when conditions are optimal. Eastern tree runs usually have insufficient cover to make them truly safe and enjoyable.
The typically high moisture content of eastern snow also causes rapid "packing" and consequent icing conditions. And, they are often so limited that they are quickly skied out after any kind of powder dump. B would be a fine place to loosen the old muscles up and rip some fine GS turns. On stuff like that, I like to get over on my edges far enough for my knuckles to drag on the snow. Sure, going fast is fun at times. But going fast and straight is terminally boring as far as I am concerned.

that really depends upon the ski area's location and typical snow fall. tree runs in the northern greens are generally skiable for at least half the season and usually really good for a solid quarter of the season i have found. just because the snow is packed down doesn't mean the trees stink no more than skiing open trails without powder isn't worth it.

The boat is flat. Western tree skiing: go to C-A-N-A-D-A. Much better. Went to the boat a long time ago, great town (the springs that is) but the hill is not worth a whole lot of time. You'd be better off at a combo trip of Red/Whitewater/Fernie or Telluride (warm up), Red Mountain pass for touring (take a guide like Clint Cook of San Juan Mt Guides) and then a couple days at Silverton.

Steamboat is not flat, Okemo, Mt Snow and Bretton Woods, now they are flat. Spent alot of days there during my college days in Laramie, the Boat was the closest major ski resort. It might not be all that steep but it was deep. I really don't remember anything in particular just alot of great skiing and good times.

The folks back there are jonsing for ASC to finally sell the place.
