In keeping with the early season thread theme, what ski area offers the best early open run? I’ll make the case for Whiteface. Excelsior to Upper Valley to Lower Valley is 2500 feet of vert off of the summit of Little Whiteface.

Aren't "best" and WROD a bit mutually exclusive??? Atleast in my book, if your talking WROD I'd be thinking of adjectives like "worst" "scariest" "most psychotic" "biggest cluster f$%k" etc ;)

Okemo at least used to offer the best early mountain skiing. They were never first, but when they turned it on, they would turn it on and would offer more terrain and better conditions than Killington or anywhere else in VT for about 3 weeks. Sunday River has had some impressive starts that I've experienced in the past few years that I've been in the area, but not as good as my memories of Okemo in the 90's.

As for the actual trail, while I haven't skied it; offering 2500 vert is tough to beat, I'll give you that HPD

I've skied Loveland in October. It's a really flat and boring wrap-around trail. They have very limited snowmaking capacity so they don't expand terrain quickly. It takes them 3 weeks to blow the acres a Killington or Sunday River do in 48 hours.

I hope to check out A-Basin's October skiing this year. Hopefully, that is a little better than Loveland.

I really don't like the Killington WROD all that much. The Glades area is okay for early season, but getting over to Snowdon via Great Northern just blows. I like HBK perhaps with an Ike option at Hunter better.

How come? From reading here I was under the impression that Blue had very good snowmaking and grooming.

mediocre+ at best. last year opening, although early, was downright horrible as root says. Way too much moisture - I don't know if there was a problem or they just wanted to make as much long lasting base crap as possible

Wachusett will usually open with 2-3 WRODs so you get a few options I guess. And grooming is good ... shrug.

Don't know the science behind it, but their opening day WROD sucked. Come to think of it...it did get better after two weeks or so.

This just shot my stoke level up...so my apologies in advance if the same happens to you:daffy:

Another vote for HBK at Hunter as well. And the way Ike often makes it in for opening day, is nice.

Last season on opening day it was huge gi-normous death cookies....Blue has good snowmaking but their grooming often sucks..they don't make enough passes and their groomers move to fast so there are often death cookies..
