Hopefully Jay Peak on sunday and/or friday if there is enough snow on the natural trails so I don't have to waste money on a lift ticket. If not I'll probably be at Wildcat friday or Sunday. And final solution, if it looks really sucky, I'll go for a hike.

so I don't have to waste money on a lift ticket.

So, you're going to waste the time to go to Jay, waste the gas to get there, waste whatever you spend for food and drink, and then not spend money on the lift ticket?

I don't get it. Even if I wanted to earn turns, I'd still buy the lift ticket to get some vert in also just to make the day worthwhile.

My suggestion is for you to stay home.

FYI, Windham just pushed back their opening date -- they're hoping by Thanksgiving weekend:

Windham fired up its snowmaking system earlier this month and is ready to go as soon as the temperatures cooperate. It looks like we will have marginal snowmaking conditions starting this weekend, so we will be able to work on getting some trails open. Our goal is to be open for Thanksgiving weekend, but that will depend on the temperatures. For daily weather updates, visit our five day forecast page.

We are certainly all off to a hell of a crappy start!

If you ever see someone with a basket running through the aisles as fast as possible with a hoodie and sunglasses, that's me. In Grand Union. I HATE running into people I know in the grocery store....way too creepy. I only go there when I'm starving to death and there's no more tree bark for me to chew on.

HAHA no doubt... Feel the same way - especially during ski season...

Can't wait to go to Price Chopper...

I heard Windham was testing fan guns at the tube park today.. Blowing clouds of water...

Hi Everyone, this is my first post, found you guys searching for somewhere to see where would be best go for thanksgiving weekend. you seem like a great group so i'll just jump in...

I too am looking to take my wife (and our dog) somewhere for the weekend.
This will be her first time [skiing] so i will probably just be spending most of the time on the bunny slopes teaching her. I just want to make sure to go somewhere that will be open and nice, and has a nice town and such. It is very important that she has a good time to guarantee future ski trips.
I dont mind driving further north [from NYC] (Stowe? Sugarloaf?) as long as there will be better conditions and a nicer environment.

We plan to drive up Wed, ski on Thurs and Fri, hang out on Sat, and drive back Sun.

If there are certain places that are likely to be better than others, i'm open to suggestions.

p.s. for those that are going to remind me that it's not worth it, i am well aware, but due to work schedules, this is really the only chance we'll get to have such a long weekend.

Well, if your really gonna take her up on those days, i suggest maybe bretton woods. If this is her first time skiing you should make sure the bunny slope is open, because i'm pretty sure she won't have a good time skiing from one trail off the top with hundreds of skiers and snow guns blasting!

Sugarbush...

...should be open, and that's the name on my Season's pass (not expecting MRG pass use unless mother nature goes beserk).

Feeling pretty confident top 1/2 of Mt. Ellen should be good. Hopin'....

snoseek, you are exactly right, the main priority in our case will be the bunny slope.

i've never been to brenton woods, i'll look into it. Thanks!

unfortunately, they dont allow pets in their condo's. I deffinitely want a fireplace and kitchen.

Don't know what will be open there, but in general, I think Bretton Woods is a very good place to take a beginner. In the past, their bunny trails were the first to open and it's completely separated from the main slopes. Don't know if that's the plan this year but many places open with terrain that would be completely unsuitable for a newbie. Stowe, for example usually opens Lord and/or Sunrise to North Slope. North Slope is pretty steep for a blue. Stowe would definately not be a good place to take a beginner until they get their operations at Spruce peak up and running. Another nice thing about BW is that once the beginner is comfortable on the true starter slopes, the whole mountain opens up to them -- there is nice green terrain off almost every lift (of course, Thanksgiving weekend they won't have that much open). BW also offers very nice views of Mt. Washington. A common criticism of BW is that it's not sufficiently challenging for stronger skiers. If money is no object, splurge and stay at the Mt. Washington Hotel.

wow, that actually sounds great. when i spoke with them on the phone, they are hopeful (like the others) to open early next week. starting with their bunny slopes.

thnx for the heads up on stowe, i would probably enjoy those trails, but thats not the point. the goal is to get the wife into it.

Money is not the issue, i'd like the stay in the nicest place possible (again, makes it more enjoyable to the wife) but the dog is an issue. they only allow pets in the Brentton Arms Country Inn (B&B) and they are closed for thanksgiving weekend.

My ASC Silver is blacked out Nov. 24 and 25 (Friday and Saturday).

Does anyone know if they give a discount on tickets on blacked out days?

I will probably ski Friday and Sunday, or maybe Saturday and Sunday. I might head up to SB or Stowe on Saturday, sleep in at the Horse in Ludlow on Sat. night, and ski K on Sunday.

Yeah, that looks like the most likely plan right now.

No discounts for passholders, but being it's the beginning of the season, I don't think tickets will be more then $41

If money is really of no concern try the Mountainview Grand Resort And Spa in Whitefield. I spent the weekend there during Easter of 2005.

This is another grand old hotel that was abandoned for many years and just recently restored. The food is excellent and the Views of Mount Washington from the wooden hot tub in the Tower Spa are to die for.

We spent $1,000 just on three days of lodging.

I'll try to ski in the White Mountains Friday and Sunday, however if pickings are slim I'll go over to Vermont where I'm sure Killington will welcome me with open arms and mid-season ticket prices...

jimg was a little harsh with his assessment, but considering jay has no natural snow any where on the mountain, you are going to be spending money on a lift ticket one way or the other.

i'll be at jay a few days next week... pending they open.
