Both times it has rained, and WOULDN"T YA KNOW IT, I'm goin up tonight to NH and I'm gonna ski Loon on thurs (rain around noon I'm seeing) and Attitash on Fri (more rain) I'm pissed! It suxks that I could never just get up & go (work) & The 3 times I actually planned on going it's rained/ gonna rain. Well, If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck @ all......

Do you have to ski Loon and Attiash? Being the wanderer that I am, I make a lot of last-minute choices. If you don't mind a tad further commute, I'd consider Wildcat and I'd also consider Stowe or further north if you can hack it from your base. It's more apt to be snowing at those el's. Of course you chance freezing rain or sleet in your travels if you do that. But.....

the best way to get the best snow is to not plan trips in advanced. when it snows, or when snow is in the forecast, you book a few days early or just wing it and go whenever it snows. vacation days during the winter are your friend.

you make it sound so easy ;)
I got the vacation days, sometimes work still gets in the way. :-(
I'm moving to France. They start you with 6 weeks vacation and it goes up from there.
I work with one individual who takes THREE separate ski vacation WEEKS each YEAR!

it is easy if you want it to be. sometimes you just can't get the right time off. for example, i can never get any of january off since that is a busy time for my company and late december and early february are really tough too. the season is long enough and it generally snows enough that if you commit to making it happen, you can score some good days mid-week and unless you have family commitments or kids (that can be more challenging i am sure), picking your weekends isn't much of a big deal. if you have kids or family obligations or what not that get in the way, no use complaining... you made your bed :p ;)

So THAT is why we have been getting the crappy weather: BLESS has been skiing here and bringing the bad weather!

Seriously, that sucks. I understand that for Riv and me we can go pretty much whenever because the areas are in our backyard, but I do understand how much you look forward to making that trip and then the weather goes south. FWIW as Riv said, it is setting up to be maybe snow/mix. So try to keep it positive. At least there won't be any crowds.

Whiteface, wind scowered ice. Sugarbush 15 inches. Same distance for me to drive. Picked Whiteface for free lodging. That sums it up for my weekend.

Since I'm locked into this trip does anyone have any encouraging words, or suggestions for things to do in the area since it looks like we're getting skunked

don't despair, man. they will likely recover from the NCP event rather quickly. unless you are looking for ungroomed natural snow trails, you should be fine next week.

Thanks for the encouraging words. Shouldn't be a problem this will be her 4th day on skis, and i'm gonna try downhill skiing for the first time (I jumped on the snowboarding craze while in hs almost ten years ago).

See if any of the sugar shacks are boiling yet. Instant cavities. Maple syrup on frozen snow, fgr. excellent. not recommended for skiing.:p

But... never give up hope. Especially at the higher el's. I skied, I forget where once, at the base it was raining, but it was heavy snow at the top. Pick a place where there is a a mid-mtn. lift. Dreamin'? maybe. Hope springs eternal...:snow:

Dude, you keep posting some variation on this theme in every thread. Your just bitter 'cause you picked a crappy weekend to go skiing! Lifts were on hold all over the place, Sugarbush included. Runs at WF and places like Stowe were all wind-scoured. You had to be in the woods for shelter. Unfortunately for you, there aren't a lot of tree runs at WF.

BLESS,

It's NOT going to rain up north this weekend. I am going up tomorrow night and will be there through Sunday for the HANNES SCHNEIDER MEISTER CUP sponsored by the NE Ski Museum. It NEEDS to be nice for that! If you are near Cranmore stop by, it's a GREAT time.

About five years ago, I did was in the same boat. Went up and stayed with my brother to hit Cannon the next morning and woke up to about an inch of solid ice glazing everything. Cannon was actually closed that day, as was almost everything around Littleton.

A few weeks later went with a couple friends to meet my brother at Cannon and went from rain to sleet to snow to slush to snow to sleet... Cannon closed again thanks to the high winds. Bretton Woods looked Okay as we passed it but went to Attitash instead. Skiing in pouring rain with mashed potato snow - pretty much miserable. White knuckled the drive home as well.

That season kind of haunted me as I had little desire to ski until last year, after four years off. Glad to be back skiing and got lucky at Sunapee yesterday as it never really full changed to rain.
