Wildcat and Bretton

I'll be skiing Cannon the 3rd week in march, but since both Bretton Woods and Wildcat have 2 for 1 on Wed, I was thinking of splurging on one of them. From a base in Lincoln or Littleton, is Wildcat worth the extra driving time and $1 lift ticket premium?

Also, does anyone have any experience trying to link up with someone to do the 2 for 1 deal? How hard is it/how long did you have to wait to find someone, etc?

you will not have an issue finding a two-fer. asking around in the lodge is common place, just look for single skiers or groups of three. wildcat is totally worth the drive for two-fer on wednesday. i have never been to bretton, but it is well known for lack of pitch or challenge. littleton to wildcat would be an hour, maybe just under if traffic is good, go for it.

Thanks. I've never been to Wildcat, and only been to Bretton once, but that was before all their expansion. I remember that they had a very good mid mountain restaurant and bar.

abso-freakin-lutely. If you have the time to make the drive it is absolutely worth it. The only reason for going to BW, IMHO, would be if you were in a diverse group of skiers, ability-wise. They both offer great views, but Wildcat has the Tuckerman side of the Presis.

Also, does anyone have any experience trying to link up with someone to do the 2 for 1 deal? How hard is it/how long did you have to wait to find someone, etc?
It shouldn't be too hard to find someone at Wildcat. The lodge will be dead, so it shouldn't be difficult to just walk up and ask someone, or hang out near the ticket line and ask there.

don't know much about Bretton Woods ....

if had to choose would go to Wildcat ...trails steep...midweek probably no more than a few dozen people on a mountain at any given moment.....don't forget you can add a day for $29, no restrictions, if next day ticket purchased before 3:30 p.m.

wildcat hands down its my favorite mountain and has some terrain for everyone. I'm headin up for 3 days of skiing in two weeks myself. Also, recently a friend of mine told me about skiing in thompson's brook. To get there I'm told you have to enter in the woods somewhere on boundary area located on skier's right. idk if it'd be good right now but i heard its fun if you can find it. Anyone else familiar with this?

I know where the entrances are, but I've never skied it. I've either been solo or the conditions haven't been good enough for it. I would be sure to ski it with others, and not alone, though.

Do not ski Thompson Brook alone. There is some pretty crazy stuff out there.

Don't ski any back country or side country alone. Good rule of thumb. And yeah like others said, the Cat is worth the extra drive from BW.

Go to Wildcat, you won't be sorry. Fantastic terrain.

As for the 2fers, my first time at Wildcat I was with my 12 year old son and walking from the parking lot to the lodge another skier and 2 of his kids asked me if I wanted 2 vouchers for free passes. So, I skied free my first day there.

Like Steve said, just ask around, a very friendly place.

What is the early/late strategy for Wildcat, if any?

not quite sure what you're getting at, but I'll answer it from a couple of different angles....

In terms of crowds, going early or late shouldn't matter. Mid-week in March should not be crowded at all. Maybe the 2-fer will bring a few more people, but most of the folks you'll see there on a Wednesday are probably local season pass holders.

In terms of snow, watch the forecast and predicted temps. Sometimes it's not a bad idea to hit Wildcat a little later in the morning, let the snow soften up a bit. However, that doesn't always seem to matter there. I tried that a couple of times last season and it never softened up for me. That's just one of the quirks of being next to Mt. Washington. If it's a powder day or shortly after a good dump, get there early. Not to beat the crowds, but to get in as much skiing as possible.

Thanks! What I meant was, does one side ski out quicker, one lift better in the afternoon, etc.

great soft small bumps late season. awesome views into the ravines and mount washington in general if you have clear views. quad should be open till the end with the triple spinning on backup duty if winds are high. best bumps are on the moderate pitched natural trails skier's right of the quad on the middle to lower mountain aspects. catenary rules 8) 8) 8)
