Wow... that's a lot of snow on the headwall. I don't know if I recall it ever being that deep up top. The way they blew the headwall up the top it actually looks like the headwall may be steeper now. Last year they easily made it to May and didn't even have close to that much snow. I dare say they may be planning something good! Keep blowing Killington, see if you can top the June 22nd closing in 1997 :fangun:

I was just going to ask how that compared to the deeper years in the mid 90's. Wow. Looks like they are going for it.

thanks for the pics. that's the real deal right there. The top definitely looks as deep as some of my memories of the mid 90s.

good to 'see' that what we've been 'hearing' isn't just marketing.

Now as long as they don't insist on grooming the snot out of it all spring, we'll be in business.

Back in the 90's, in the area where the chair crosses superstar on the lower headwall to the lower Ovation crossover would be built up higher than the chair. Then the section in the middle would also be as high as the chair. In those picks it looks like they are approaching those levels. They've definitely surpassed it on the upper headwall, which is good, because back in the day you frequently had to walk down some of the upper headwall in June.

That's the whole key, the middle flat!! That part just gets hammered by the sun in the Spring and since it's flatish in that area, the melting water doesn't run-off as effficiently as on the upper + lower headwalls, thus accelerating the melt from ground up as well as the usual top down.

Back in the 90's, they used to have glorified snowth depth stakes/trail signs near the middle of Supe where cross trails accessed it. That mid section when the "glacier" was done would usually be in the 20 to 25 foot deep range

Very impressive. I wonder what the carbon footprint is for that much snow....

/mixed feelings.

I know I saw a cross reference post from I believe Geoff recently showing that in his digging into all things K, Highwaystar had found documents filed with the state showing that K was allowed to use/store 1,000,000 gallons of diesel for the snowmaking system over the course of the snowmaking season.

Hopefully they push a lot of that snow over and have an even amount across the whole trail.

Even if they do stop spinning lifts May 9th, it looks like people will be able to hike for quite some time into late spring. :daffy:

That's actually the key to a good late season run on Supe, managing the melt effectively! The sooner bare ground gets exposed to the edges, the quicker the ground warms there, the quicker the melting from below starts and the quicker large "cancer spots" show up

Regardless of how much snow they make I don't see them going past May 9th. Weather dependent obviously, I am guessing Sugarloaf, Sugarbush, and anyone else trying to make a push will most likely close the first weekend in May, so the 9th would give them bragging rights. This is the same company that blew a ton of snow in October only to watch it melt, and closed on a Saturday last year. Clearly they are starting to get it, but I am doubtful we will see a complete 180 and have them spin the lift until June. It will be interesting to watch for sure.

Hope I am wrong......

Blog today:

Thanks to optimal temperatures, we’ve been making snow top-to-bottom on Superstar for the past five days as we continue our regular spring stockpile to get us to the end of the season.
Snowmaking has now moved over to Needle’s eye, so get out and enjoy some soft moguls this weekend on Superstar.

Closing Saturday last May, I think Killington day tickets were $35.00.

It would be a good sign if Killington put a spring pass on sale and announced a late closing. From March 1 onwards, they need to go back to "The King of Spring" marketing. Even the Killington haters show up when it's the last thing standing in May.

hates? who hates k? pray for good weather on the weekends!! as we all know what can happen very quickly, bye bye....
