Resort or Ski Area: Windham Mountain, NY
Conditions: ~20's PP, Some ice scrapes
Trip Report:
Got to use our Warren Miller freebies before they went bust. We arrived Thursday morning shortly after the lifts were spinning with partly sunny skies.
You have to love mid-week skiing. The mountain was fairly vacant less a couple ski clubs.
Spent the morning on the east peak getting the wife up and running again after our pregnancy hiatus. We skied Wanderer and variations of the lower mountain until she needed a break. While she went to the lodge I rode up the Whirlwind Express to the west side and skied most of the blues to skiers right. Conditions were fairly decent with mostly packed powder, but the remains of the ice that fell recently were still peaking out through areas that were scraped off. Especially on Old Wolverine where in between the bumps you needed skates. They really will need some more coverage with the upcoming holiday/vacation weeks.
Later in the afternoon, wifeless, I shared a chair with a gentlemen from a Jersey ski club. After much conversation about our impatience for icy bumps, ice and hardpack, he pointed out that Upper Wolverine was spectacular.
A double black, something I personally had never felt up to. We reached the top and he convinced me to drop in behind him as we skied the left side which was indeed soft and inviting. I had such a blast I couldn't believe I wasn't skiing this all morning!! As we rode up again, we talked about work and his club and how they have one unwritten rule: "Never follow Bill!" "Oh, I'm Bill by the way." He replied.
Well thanks for the invite and the moral support Bill, hope to ski with you again sometime.
