Hey, Where is the best XC skiing right now within 3 hours of Connecticut? My skis are going to turn into dust here. I need to find some snow.

Lake Placid - Mt van hoevenberg has all their trails open groomed and tracked. But that might be more than three hours from conn.

I doubt you'll find anything worthwhile within 3 hours. You may want to check the Mt. Washington Valley. Jackson Ski Touring in Jackson, NH; http://www.jacksonxc.org/Ski_Conditions/ski_conditions.htmBear Notch in Bartlett http://www.bearnotchski.com/or at the Mt. Washington Hotel. http://69.60.173.202/xcountryski/index.cfm-edit_id=899.htm

Otherwise, Whitacre Woods in North Conway is pretty good, and Weissner Woods at Stowe. Weissner is probably you're best bet, as I'm pretty sure there's more snow in northern VT than in NH right now. Also, its free.

But they're all about 4 - 4 1/2 hours from central CT.

Any where on the TUG HILL plateau e.g. Snow Ridge and Carpenter Road XC trails and Whetstone Gulf xc area ( all with lodges) reporting get this 53 inches of pow in last several days and still snowing very hard 3-5 inches /hr today.

lodging can be found in Turin , NY or Lowville ny or Boonville ny all near this region and great skiing either XC or dh Small vert tho for downhillers 500 ft

Not sure where you are in CONN but NYS thruway to Utica NY then about 40 minutes north ( total time from from Albany 2.5 hrs)

Hey thanks. The one in New York sounds good. Damn, over 50 inches! If we go, I should bring along a Saint Bernard with some schnopps to dig us out if we get stuck. Driving 5 hours for snow like that doesn't sound bad. We'll see.

The drive doesn't seem like 5 hours at all. They keep the roads in very good shape and its really just one road the whole way.
Parents are going to be there this weekend- i'll post their report for you.

Hey Guys Its not just one road all the way to either Snow Ridge , Turin, Lowville , Boon ville or Old Forge areas--------- but they do keep them pretty fair --make DAMNED sure to check BOTH Snow reports and WINDS and 4WD is a REAL plus

I live an hr and half north of this area and it been snowing on the TUG HILL PLateau , blowing , drifting , many roads closed for periods , many folks staying in fire halls becaude they wre caught in WHITEOUTS . This has been going on over 5 days now .

Today there are parts of " the TUG "getting another 1-2 FEET with serious wind , low visibility etc

One town has gotten ---------------SIXTY three inches since Sunday

When teh LAKE EFFECT EVENT IS FINALLY OVER --it'll be AWESOME skiing , riding , XC., snow mobiling etc

BUT believe me RESPECT Lake EFFECT WHITEOUTS if you've never been in one you simply can't believe their fury----TAKE caution and be prepared with adequte safety stuff in your vehicle , shovel , xtra food , sand, flares , xtra socks , a cell --IF CELL SERVICEis functional etc

Yeah, this is a tough year for XC (and alpine!). One thing to remember is that you really don't need much snow. 2" of cement on smooth trails can make for passable skiing. When there's 6" on the ground even the local trails in NJ can be a lot of fun. 5 hours is a long drive for XC - might be worth seeing if we get some snow locally.

FYI, Lake Placid is great. The XC from the ranger station to the Mt. Marcy dam is top notch (and free).

Don't worry, I went to school in Edinboro, PA and had tons of lake effect every year. I don't enjoy driving in white-outs. I had been very lucky the few times I had and will not volunteer for the task. I'll wait to go. Maybe someplace else that doesn't require tunnels between houses....
