I hit 50 days today. I went up early to Snowbird. Their spring hours are from 8am to 2pm. Cinco de Mayo was not nearly as nice a day as yesterday, and was mostly cloudy with frozen granular/dust on crust type of conditions. I didn't go off the groom at all during my three hour morning visit.
On a marginal visibility day it's always nice to see some light exiting the Peruvian tunnel, this is 8:17 AM this morning:

The pros competing in the Woodward Peace Park didn't really get rolling by the time I left, but there was plenty of talent skiing around the mountain.
This is off Chips Run low on the Peruvian side, he was part of a freestyle team lined up towards the left in this photo:

Did you get stuck up there? Another mudslide occurred at Seven Turns (or “Seven Sisters”) and closed the road from 12 or so until 6pm. I was at Brighton today.

49) 05/06/23 - Killington, VT - beautiful mornin for slush bumpin. skied from first chair to 12:30 and then called it. it got kinda crowded after 11 so there was a lift line and some people to dodge, particularly on the headwall. 20 laps on superstar chair.

while i long for the clean 50, that may have been my last day of the season, so an intentional run down bittersweet to end my season.

despite the shitty weather in the front end of the year, i had one of the best seasons of my life.

number one reason for best season status is physical fitness. i skied 1.4 million vertical feet, for an average of 28.5k per day. and that commonly meant skiing like 40k on saturday adn then 20k on sunday before leaving earlyish to drive home. looking at ski tracks my previous average was more around 20k. these extra runs every day were proof that working out 5-7 days a week was having a serious impact on my skiing. i skied longer and stronger than ever before this year.

second reason for best season was my willingness to audible and go far in search of the best snow. christmas and mlk holiday skiing would have been entirely shitty or skipped if i didn't keep it flexible and go to canada. both amazing powder skiing trips despite the crowds. and i love montreal so really any reason to pass thru for a night is welcomed. my gf and i are going for an outdoor dj thing in september for 3 nights. cant wait.

number three reason for best season status is my western trip. i have never skied such consistently perfect conditions out west. it snowed like 4-10" every overnight. feet and feet stacked up while i was there, while never getting so heavy that it fucked my travel or roads or terrain access. really perfect.

number four reason was march and april. miracle march and gorgeous april. banner season for spring skiing.

regrets? i've had a few. mainly missing sugarloaf and saddleback and underutilizing my indy pass.

so yea, 49 days, 1.4M vert, 9 states/provinces, 2 countries. great season.

i could go back to big snow to complete the 50 and close the circle. but i dont think i will do that.

Good one today with my daughter at sugarbush. #97 and counting.

Every day skiing in May with your kids is a good day but the lasting impact will be the overall sugarbush experience. Cool culture and great setup in the base area. Pool and restaurant would work for the wife. 2:30 door to door, had three hours in my head for some reason. 2:30 is not appreciably different than KBL or SR - makes IKON a more viable second pass.

No, apparently I left about 30 mins before it happened. Lucky!

I'll be 70 this year and my "kid" is 32. You are setting yourself up for a lifetime of family fun on the slopes.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to know the details of my ski season, but the fact that I read this thread regularly, is indicative that someone really does want to know about your season, so perhaps someone want to know mine!

My compliments to anyone who is still working a full-time job who actually skis 50 or more days a year. Before I retired, that was a rarity.

Since I retired, 100+ days per season has become routine. The fact that I have a slope-side ski-on/ski-off has me skiing on many a day that I would not have even considered getting into my car.

These are my 2022-3 numbers: (I may do a day or two more, but I doubt it.)

2022-3: Nov.16, 2022 to May 12, 2023
150 days: 136 lift-serviced
118 (104 lift serviced) Crotched Mtn., 12 Sunapee, 13 Killington, 5 Okemo, 2 Mt. Snow
3.2M vertical lift serviced, averaging 23,500K per lift-served day
One day max, lift-serviced: 68,250 vertical.
Earned turns (all at CM) about 12.5K, averaging about 900 vertical per hiking event
One day max earned turns: 3K;

Haven’t had much time to make the trek up Mt Washington. Figured yesterday was going to be my best chance. Got to Pinkham Notch later than I’d like so knew my best option was going to be Hillman’s Highway. Made it to the top of Hillman’s in about 3 hrs. Well worth the trek as the snow was perfect and quite bumped up! Still a decent amount of snow up there. Might try again next weekend if the weather turns out nice. Still want to get to 50, although I’m happy extending my consecutive months skiing streak to 19!
Hike up is certainly easier with snow

LoafSkier: I really enjoyed your photos from Tuckerman. They brought back a lot of good memories. I went there last in 1988 and as much as I enjoyed my trips there when I was younger, I've "aged out" of that activity!

What follows is a photo of me at the base in 1970. The A-frame I used for carrying my skis was made out of my first pair of skis. It was heavy compared with the aluminum rigs of today.

That’s awesome! I respect the ingenuity of your custom set up back then! Certainly have it way easier these days

I don't keep track of my details of days skied etc.

Threads like this are more like a journal for me vs wanting others to know about where and how much I skied. Maybe I look back some years from now and reminisce about the early days of my kids skiing development or fondness about race seasons.

I hit 55 today. Hoping to top last year's 61, but it could be close. I've got to the end of May and will also be busy contributing to a bathroom remodeling project. Likely to return East in early June.

Snowbird:
12 May, this is part of the bowl served by the Little Cloud chairlift. The high ridge is OOB. In bounds terrain is lower down and accessed by the cat track to left. There are two guys skiing the huge chute (Pipeline) in right center of photo. One is the black spec halfway down, the other is the black spec waiting on side of trail where chute opens up. So much snow here still! Haven't seen many skiing Pipeline this winter. I assume due to high avi risk.

13 May, this is last weekend for the huge Woodward Peace Park in Mineral Basin at Snowbird. It will close tomorrow in fully operational shape, just not enough staffing and/or demand to keep it open.

Happy Mother's Day to lady AlpineZoners!

I can’t believe that I got to ride at Mammoth. Last week felt like a dream. What a way to end the season.

@LuckyStrike ,
I think you picked a winner going to Mammoth at this time. I've been skiing Snowbird a lot the last few weeks and haven't seen a lot of ideal spring ski days. The snow pack is still super deep. But it was often cool and overcast making for firm surfaces and flat light. Then it was occasionally too warm and sunny making for quickly developing slushy conditions. Those nice in-between days were you systematically follow sun exposure around the mountain for good surface conditions have been the exception, rather than the rule.

The Mammoth conditions were incredible. A couple of the mornings left the upper mountain a bit firm but by noon it was perfect. I had to really work on holding my tongue listening to locals talking about how "sketchy" or "icy" the conditions were. The snowpack must have been 15-20 feet (or more) which made the tree riding absolutely splendid. My friend was buddies with a local guy and he took me around and showed my places I would never have ventured into on my own. Traverses into untouched snowbowls, hiking up to spots where we could drop into fresh tree lines, steeps that I would have normally blanched at I said fuck it and came out exhilarated to be alive.
I stayed in the Inn at Mammoth and in each room and in the lobby there is the same book (kind of like the Mammoth Bible) called Tracks of Passion. It's pretty much the life story of Dave McCoy, the founder of Mammoth. In it you how the man build the lodge, cut the trails, build the lifts, built the Inn, built the gondola etc... This guy basically willed Mammoth into being, an absolutely Herculean task. Sadly you will then notice that the inn needs new carpets and paint. So does the outside of the inn and the Yodler apres bar next door. The lodge is a hodgpodge of different building styles and is also looking a bit down at the heels. The lifts are numerous and adequate but many orginal lifts remain. I hope Alterra can build on McCoys incredible achievments or at the very least polish them up a bit for the time being.
