my youngest daughter used to like the southridge triple at killington with it's crazy turns. i used to get a few more runs in because she liked that chair:)
i would vote that as being the coldest on a cold, windy day, tho!

If we wanna talk about the coldest chairs. I think the green mountain freezer wins hands down for the coldest chair in the world

Can anyone explain WHY this lift is shaped the way it is?

It is a triangle if I recall...

I recall reading i these forums at one time the reasoning...it had something to with they could develope the land under the lift...thus the large loop of towers and cabling...fun area to ski...

This was done due to the unique topography of the South Ridge area. Apparently, the powers that be wanted high elevation beginner terrain when this lift was installed. However, the lower half of the terrain was solidly intermediate. They therefore neded a mid-station to enable beginners to access that terrain w/o having to use the steeper stuff. I believe the triangle shape was b/c it was the only way to place the base, summit, and mid-station in locations where they made sense while still providing beginners with that terrain access. Had they run a straight lift right up the Jug, the terrain is steeper over there and the beginner terrain would have been out of play.

Interesting. Makes sense. I thought it might have something to do with future expansion (or incorporating two or three existing lifts into one). That is one looooonnnnggggg line then. Must be kind of spooky skiing underneath the empty-return line...that is if that terrain is accessible. Why didn't they just keep the return line with the uphill line and add a bow in it? Engineering difficulties? Cost?

The Old Gondi at Gore

Back in the day when they were long enough for romance...ah youth....

The old gondola at Gore was also about 2 bowls long, if you catch my drift...

That was a great old lift. When it went thru the old mid-station on a windy day the little orange cars would get blown all over while crossing the big ravine above the Sunway trail. The other classic lift at Gore was the old double up Showcase that ended right at the shoulder of the mountain in a natural wind-tunnel. In January that was !@#%$^$#! cold, baby.......

Current fave lift is the hybrid at Orford in Quebec. Half gondola, half six-pack......

What year did the lose the old gondola at Gore?

At least 15 years ago, possibly more. I haven't skied there since the mid-80s and it was there then, as I recall. I think it was taken out around 1990 or so.

they lost the gondola maybe 5 years ago, casue i remeber riding the old 1 when i was middle school. I think they kept it from going to the top so they could open up alot of that terrain on bear mountain and so they more people could use it since it didnt go to the peak.

My favorite lift was the High peak double at Gore. It was a old ricktey chair, but it took you to some nice trails. Ive seen more wildlife on that chair than any other one

The lift I love the most is ironically the lift I hate the most too. The Wildcat Express. It's super fast, covers the whole mountain and has incredible views. BUT...
Its fickle nature with mechanical problems and wind holds makes it the Jeckyll and Hyde of ski lifts.
Like River said earlier in this thread, if the old Wildcat Gondi was still around it would be that one. The old summit T-bar at Cannon was good too. Steepest T i've ever ridden.

When there was alot of snow, upper darby was probabaly my favorite trail on that mountain (expect for twister glade). I might Have to get back there adn check out the all new additions
