I'm thinking skiing....what do you do when riding the lift with other people? Do you talk? Listen? Smoke? Ignore them? Do you ride solo?

When I ride with strangers, I usually try to strike up a conversation...get to know where they are from, what they have skied/rode, where they usually ski, etc. You'd be surprised who you run into and what you learn.

Last season, I rode up the lift with DM, the person who really "owned" Burke Mountain from 2000-2005. He introduced himself...and I knew who he was. So I played dumb and asked some questions about the mtn and where it was going. He also shared how he knew the current owner and how he helped get the mountain where it was today. Pretty interesting conversation.

I tend to pick my nose but that wasnt an option.

I like to just watch other skiers. No cheering or jeering. sometimes you can pick up on something useful.

I like talking to the other people on the chair. I like to know if they are new to skiing the area and that sort of thing. A couple of years ago I rode up the lift at Burke with one of the guys that founded Topozone.com. That was a cool conversation.
A lot of times while I'm admiring the view (I never get sick of looking at mtns  ). I end up pointing out to the co-liftriders what mountains they can see from the lift.

I strike up conversation. If I'm flying solo that day, I usually bring lunch with me and eat it on the lift.

I'm a pretty shy guy so I don't always spark up converstaions, but I do try to sometimes. I mostly like to check out my surroundings.

I really had a hard time not making fun of the rich snob a$$holes at Stowe in March who said to us, "hey, you can't ride this lift..." and then proceeded to ignore us and talk about their "investment portfolios" for the entire lift ride. Dude, leave shoptalk at work....

Joke around with my buddies and take a smoke break usually. If Im riding solo I might strike up a convo but when I do that its usually weekday so Im usually on the chair by myself. Then I beatbox. Wierd kind of but its fun and passes those long solo lift rides quickly.

- I tune my skis edges
- Wax my skis
- Stretch my muscles
- Take energy gels
- Do a few squats to get my pump on
- Focus on the next run

I am so hardcore.

Oh I forgot, lift rides are a great opportunity to pass gas too.
