fair enough

I just think it's possibly to carve much shorter linked turns. When I think carve, I think edges set without skidding. Definititions vary

Chase is right...its a bit of semantics, but when you're on that steep run and you think you're carving there's probably more skidding going on than you recognize...unless you're on a ski with a 12meter radius or you're going 50mph and looking like Bode, you're skidding to some extent. I can relate to the need to work on my skid...after years of mastering the carve its tough to let those edges slide...but trying to arc 'em in the trees just ain't good for your dental work. Skidding is an important tool in the expert skier's bag of tricks...the Scot Schmidt "smear turn" is a fancy name for a high speed skid.

What can vary? You have it exactly right. Watch any competent racer on a rock-hard course. The ones who win skid the least since skidding scrubs speed.

I tend to roll off my edge and skid a little as I complete my turn as part of initiating the next one. In the bumps and trees, it's very pronounced. I prefer skis that unlock the edge when you roll it flat. Salomon and Volkl always seem to feel the best to me. Atomics tend to be so grippy that they hurt my knees.

there is a variation on a carve that i use on steep terrain. it where you are pivoting right where the sidecut on your ski/board begins. so you are basically carving sort raduis jump turns. no one ever showed my how to do it. you can skid your tail out if you need to check you speed more than the turn did. doing this in flud motion alows you to keep as much of you edge as posible at any give time on the ground. the smoother you do it the more stabe your edge will be and the more i control you will be. it just seems the most natural way to turn when its steep terain.

This is a nonsense statement. If you can't carve a turn, you're going to flail on a 40 degree slope.

yeah...care to explain why someone can't rip steeps if the can't/don't carve? Those western skiers could learn to carve pretty easily but most of them just don't care...a lot of JH/LCC locals don't even bother skiing unless its a good day...

So did anyone rip 40 degree slopes in the straight ski days when nobody carved? :flame:

I give up. You know all since you're a mighty Poconos flats skier. Nobody carved on straight skis? Puh-lease.

My biggest weakness is skiing too defensively too much of the time, leading to early fatigue. I need to learn to let loose and go with the flow more often.

Chase isn't from the Poconos..the Poconos are like the Grand Tetons compared to his home mountain...but let him explain his case...oh yeah and 1982 called and they want their ski style back...:smash:

Geoff could eat your lunch. successful, skiing year round. Has house in the mountains and its not his parents. :spin: I'm with Geoff on this issue. Many of us started on straight boards and have more years on them than the newer technology. I wonder what I was doing all those years. I thought I was carving.

I'm with Geoff on this one. Maybe not as many, but good skiers still carved back during the days of straight boards.

I have heard this claim multiple times but i have never seen a video of anyone making pure carved turns on straight skis.

So having money and age makes you all knowing?

No it means maybe he has done it. He tends not to make outlandish claims. He has a head on his shoulders and skied on old type boards.

I think your claim is off base.

I'm not too much of a ego guy, but I raced. We always worked on carved turns. So I fail the age part of your statement also.

I did a quick you-tube search and could not find someone making pure carved turns, on straight skis, as the video I posted shows. Until I see a video of someone carving railroad tracks on straight skis I will continue to believe that you, Geoff and DHS have much more liberal views on what consists of carving than I do.

Definitions change, I have no doubt that when people raced on straight skis they considered themselves to be carving.

Because if it's not on YouTube, it isn't reality, right?

Wow. You're really wrapped up in this whole carving thing. Where's the video of you carving "railroad tracks"? What do I search for on YouTube?
