Tim Kelley is the skier on NECN. Matt Noyes is a great weather man and I enjoy his blog. But I don't think he likely does more than limited recreational skiing. Tim Kelley has considerable experience and frequently calls out ski areas when discussing temperatures and snow events.

Good to know that. While good forecasts are always important, a perspective above 2000' from a snow-lover's prespective is infinitely more useful. It typically provides an non-obvious angle into oddities that are only of value to sliders.

BTW, I went to Matt's site and noticed the live cam/chat was operating the other day. I asked a smart a$$ question - "when is it going to snow?" and got a "smart a$$ answer - "When it's Winter. It snows in the winter"

BTW, I'm glad your aggregator includes FIS. I was hoping, so I checked and, voila! it was there! Thanks!

Even if Matt Noyes is not on point with the snow sports loving population, he knows his weather and has great forecasts. Check out some of his video and in depth analysis. The dude loses me sometimes when he goes too in depth. That is a benefit to the ski enthuist analysis... you get to know a few key important terms and scenerios and get familiar with a basic lingo and what it means for a very narrow localized type of weather event. I don't want to need a B.S. in Met to understand where and when it is going to snow but you don't generally get that from the TV forecasts. NECN is pretty damn good for TV forecasts though, when it comes to snow predictions. Matt Noyes does not get the localized specific mountain name drops like Tim Kelley does... you know Tim is looking for where the powder is going to be falling.

Word, glad it helped! I think I have more weather blogs on there than ski blogs  But many are not active yet. No word from Roger Hill lately, Single Chair Blog from Fox has yet to post this season, and Tim Kelley's ski forecast has been mostly silent since Sunday River opened last month. I suspect it will be a great resource two or three days before a big storm when every forecaster I am following chimes in.

Ouch!! :)

Hi Guys,

Matt Noyes here. Saw the posts, so let me answer as many questions as I can:

* I love skiing. I learned late in life for a New Englander - 8 years old - at King Pine. That said, I am definitely a recreational skier - I do no glades, no jumps, not much above black diamonds (ie: no double blacks). I look like a goofball when I accidentally ski into moguls. Make no mistake about it - if I didn't have a long list of appearances and stuff for work, I'd spend every winter day on the slopes, and every summer day either on my PWC or trout fishing. But, that's not my reality, unfortunately. Doesn't mean I love it any less - I find tremendous release on the slopes - it just means I don't have the time to actually feed the passion like most regular powderhounds do. :???:

* Tim *definitely* is our team's top Skiing Meteorologist! He has a place at Stowe, is the only one of us who has a home up North, and that means he's the one who can feed the passion regularly! He's at the mountains every weekend. He hikes to the top of Mansfield to ski down. He's done Tuck's a bunch of times. Places I've only been when there's no snow on the ground, but someday hope to try and not kill myself doing them. If you like to go above and beyond, he's the BEST! He's awesome for me in the Weather Center, too, because he knows how much I love skiing but rarely get the time to come out, so he's kind enough to share his knowledge and experiences with me along the way.

* Be careful not to make too many assumptions because there's not much name-dropping in a broadcaster's weathercasts for specific resorts!! Though it can be really beneficial to show you care and are involved, you can also isolate others that you don't mention. When it pertains to the weather, you'll hear me mention it - this past storm, for example, I named which mountains would get the best upslope snow. Jay Peak probably gets the most mentions per season because every good squall line with a following NW wind drops a foot! :)

* I share as much information as possible via as many media methods as possible. I've found Twitter is the best for ski-related forecast thoughts, though my blog helps me to get that across, too: twitter.com/mattnoyes and MattNoyes.net, respectively. Of course, our Weather Team all contributes to our team blog at WeatherNewEngland.com, including Ski Reports from Tim on Thursday and Friday nights.

* BillSki, I specifically remember you logging on, and I knew it was you because I'd seen you on this forum (until today, I've always just viewed as a guest). The answer I gave was entirely in jest, because literally *everyone* who logs on asks the same question. Keep in mind that I was between live TV weather segments I do every 10 minutes all morning long, so there's not much time for in-depth explanation. What you probably didn't see is that I did a 16 minute video technical discussion that played for 24 hours after I signed off from livestreaming and specifically answered your question! In fact, this time of the year my video technical discussions focus almost totally on snow. Anyone who knows me (which you don't yet...but hopefully you will...) knows I'm anything but wise-butt when it comes to snow...or the weather in general! Serious business. Just couldn't do it with 4 minutes until my next weather hit, ya know? You can access the "On-Demand" button on the video window to see the archived discussions if you want to verify for yourself!

Anyway, bottom line is I care a lot, even if I've yet to do my first helo-drop! It's not only because I love skiing, or because I love every aspect of weather and winter in New England, but just as much because I want to give you what you're looking for. I heard from a lot of snowmobilers a couple of years ago who took me by the hand and showed me their favorite websites, and told me exactly what information and webcams they want to see on the news because they felt they couldn't find it anywhere else on TV. I really appreciated that, and have learned a lot on my own based on what they showed me. Several years ago, I asked some of my mariner and aviation friends to do the same, and now it's easy to show the best stuff every hour in about 15 seconds. So, if there's something more or different you're looking for, shoot me an email, reply to this post, etc. I'm always interested to hear, and always on the lookout for your feedback.

Later!
Matt

So are you a stoner or what?

No just kidding. As far as tv broadcast weather goes NECN is easily the best, most informative, and maybe even accurate i have ever seen. Out here I need to dig deeper for that kind of info. Good work!!

P.S. my mom has a crush on you I think.

Oh yeah...thanks for the reminder...not a stoner! :) Please tell your Mom I'm flattered! Maybe she and I can get stoned together!!! :) Just kidding... Glad to hear you like what we offer over at NECN, but don't hesitate to let me know if there's ever something different you think would be beneficial!

Wow, AlpineZone has been visited by a celebrity!

Thanks for chiming in Matt! NECN has been my favorite television weather source for as long as I can remember and I currently use NECN forecasts and your tech discussions as one of my many resources for making destination decisions on powder days. I stream NECN video online now as I do not have television, so I appreciate that option. Your Technical Discussion video is sensational! Really cool of you to do the extra leg work to share your thoughts online (though I will admit, some of it goes over my head but I get the jist as far as the snow goes!). Cool of you to stop by AZ and chime in. Cheers!

And since Matt was too modest to post a link, here is his site http://www.mattnoyes.net/ with the tech discussion video on the In Depth page.

Beneficial would be to move to Colorado and broadcast here lol. Oh and wait till my mom finds out you want to smoke weed with her-she will be very very upset:razz:

Edit- you guys should bump this thread as storms draw closer and link to his blog I think.

Ayup!

Hey Matt,
Thanks for chiming in. This group, as I'm sure you've surmised by now, is an equal-opportunity picker-on-er. I asked a smart-a$$ question and deserved due course, than you!

Yes, Rivercoil (Steve) urged me to look at your technical discussion which I did, and I was duly impressed. I commented on another thread that the intelligent meterologists must get pretty frustrated trying to characterize weather in a few minutes that get relegated to sound bites.

Need not tell you that skiers and boarders come in multiple types and multiple agendas. IMHO, the most vocal sliders on AZ the most passionate about the sport and speak their mind.

If I could ask one thing, it's a reading on what's going on above 2000 feet. It's an entirely different world from the valley, which is what most NWS forecasts are.

We have learned how to read between the lines. Scott Braaten, well, there's one amateur metorologist and awesome Mt. Mansfield skier http://www.famousinternetskiers.com/weather/ that you really should look at. His work really hits the nail on the head for northern Vermont. He is very well respected in these circles.

For me, I'm a east coast powder hound. I've put together my own little dashboard to help simple-minded me size up the New England situation and make a decision in 10 minutes or less where to point the car. http://www.iabsi.com/public/ski/ My destinations are often spontaneous. Maybe it will help, maybe not.

Would love to have you come to our ski club and talk about snow prognostication some day. Maybe next year?

Anyways, thanks for stopping by.

Welcome Matt!!I am a big NECN fan and think they have the most reliable forecasting of any NE broadcasting station.I will give props to Tim Kelly as I've met him more than a few times at Cannon. As a matter of fact,I'll give you something to bust his ba11s.Tim had to buy me a beer in the Cannon pub after I out forecasted him on snowfall amount at Cannon maybe 8 years ago.Last time I saw him there he was in the bar with Joe Joyce and I sprang for the beers.Keep up the good work and welcome aboard!

I found it a pleasant surprise to see Matt post here! Although I'm a newbie here myself, I'll still say "Welcome!"

I'm a "met" as well and am thrilled that Matt took the time to stop in and chat a little. I can't say that I watch NECN...nothing personal...it's just I can't watch everything all the time. But from the few times I've seen him I can say that Matt's passion really shines through. Here's why...he was at a NWS weather conference in MA back in Oct and he took part in a Q&A session with a few other TV mets. Not only were his answers enlightening and entertaining, he did a really cool shout out to a young kid in the audience just for attending the conference. That must've made that kids YEAR to have that happen and I gotta give Matt a lot of credit for focusing on the kids that day. While I try to tag along in the forecasting biz as well, Matt is a class act and we're lucky to have him post here!

Cheers!

Matt and Winnchill: Welcome to the board. It's nice to have some pro mets on board. Now if we can convince you guys to give us a heads up when and where the dumpages will fall we'll be golden:wink:
