I think a lot of it has to do with youth participation in sports and family memories from those experiences. At least that's the case for me. My father and his brothers grew up playing basketball and baseball worshiping Bill Russell and Ted Williams. My older brother grew up playing basketball and baseball worshiping Dave Cowens and Yaz. I played the same sports worshiping Larry Bird and Jim Rice.

We all loved football too as it was something to watch in the fall as the Red Sox didn't contend outside of 86  and the basketball season hadn't gotten started yet. I eventually went on to play football throughout High School. I never played organized hockey, but had skates and would play pond hockey with kids in the neighborhood and loved Neely and Bourque.

When me and my brother weren't playing sports, we were watching the local teams on TV with our dad and uncles. Great memories. Big family BBQs every week before we watched the games.

I did quit basketball and baseball after the 6th grade though. I fell in love with skiing over any other athletic pursuit and didn't want to miss a day on the slopes ever again to play basketball in the winter. We routinely skied Killington into May when I was a kid, which conflicted with the local youth baseball, so baseball was out for me as well. Though I no longer played those sports, I still watched them religiously with my dad.

So, because of my upbringing I'm a HUGE Boston sports fan. It's likely that when my wife and I have kids, they will be too. Well, they'll be introduced to it just as I was as a kid.

This! Well stated DHS other than the Boston sports part of course:razz: I do love watching sports and have lots of great memories of time spent with friends and different generations of family members, many of whom are gone now. It was great to listen to my grandfather and his brother fight over who were the best ball players from their days. I played several different sports as a kid and played baseball though the HS level and played football in college so when watching games it brings me back in a way to my playing days. That said normally if I have a chance to do some activity, I will almost always choose that over watching a sports event (unless its a family get togehter) so I guess I am not a true fanatic but I sitll do really enjoy watchnig my teams compete.

+1
Have introduced all 3 of my boys to Boston sports and it looks like it is sticking so far

Growing up on the Jersey shore my family followed Philly teams (and my Dad liked the Raiders). Never followed or liked NYC teams, especially the Yankees. As a kid I found watching baseball to be boring but football was OK. For the most part, however, I could take or leave professional sports teams.

I don't really follow Boston area teams but I like to see them win. I'll watch the game but it would not be a tragedy if I couldn't. It's a lot more important for me to get in a good day of skiing.

Definitely snow for me. I’m probably the only 100% hetero all-american male who doesn’t care about football.

Did you know that over the entire course of an average game, the ball is in play for only 11 minutes?

Basketball is probably worse with all the standing around, and dont even get me started on soccer.

Slopes!!

Superbowl is awesome, but DVR has a purpose. Shut off the media devices and hit the slopes.

Basketball, standing around? What on earth are you talking about? Kid's basketball perhaps?

All of that are more active than skiing though. Skiers get to SIT down on the chair!

Magic has $46 lift tix both Sat & Sun, $25 on Monday (if pre-purchased online). If you're over 50, Saturday lift tickets are 50% off in celebration of the 50th anniversary

I see way too much standing in place during a typical game. Setting up plays etc... light movement. I find it boring.

I'm actually wondering if it will be crowded on Sunday...everyone will think the slopes will be empty, and there is time to ski before the game, so they will come.

A few of my sources at Mount Snow tell me that based upon things such as ski school bookings, Sunday shouldn't be too bad at all. Might have a little volume in the morning, but many folks will be leaving by lunch time. Saturday on the other hadn looks to be a bit busy, and for Mount Snow atleast, based upon their webcam, today, it looks like they've got a good sized midweek crowd there today.

My guess is that the crowds on Sunday will be more weighted towards families, and less of the single/ couples without kids crowd who will be more likely to be making plans and attending a Superbowl party
