Looks like a Jay ad to me.

And the widening of Willoughby a few years back kinda goes against their state law idea. Not to mention Warren's and Big Dipper are pretty damn wide by design. If Burke is "true" Vermont skiing, what areas offer "false" Vermont skiing?

I like the added attractions are nothing more than distractions. What BS. Even if that marketing fluff was created pre-QBurke, Ginn certainly had big ideas for Burke and I think the folks running Burke know that they can't make it without distractions.

Thanks for the pic upload, billski.

Gee, that's a real positive response River :( The poster was created two years ago. FWIW, I like it, true or not I am attracted to these ideals. I've met quite a few people there, locals and staff alike. The vibe of an area is often defined by its customers. For me terrain is half of it, the people the other half. I haven't met a soul I didn't like. I'm told it's trans formative after a few visits.

rivercOil is correct, it does look like a JPR ad. Whatever, maybe they used the same agency two years ago. Personally, I like this recent offering from Jay. If more people were raised jay, the world would be a better place:

No problem, billski. Always happy to pop into a thread and be a downer. :D

I like the ideals. My issue was that the ideals run contrary to what is actually there and happening. Burke crying foul on widening trails after what happened to Willoughby and the fact that they already have a Super G trail is criminal marketing. I get the spirit of what they are going for there but their execution was poor. Because the spirit at Burke is indeed awesome, I just don't think it is captured exceptionally well by that poster.

The latest JPR piece that SBR posted is pretty good.

I love both those ads!
Now I really want to head to Northern VT right now. I think I like the Jay Peak one better though.

It talks about morals and the people on the mountain. Doesn't even mention that it pretty much has the best skiing in the East.

I always enjoyed reading the hype that the Jay marketing team spewed in the past. It's all corporate B.S. but hugely entertaining in a twisted way for an English major like me.

The nonsense they spew is not to be taken seriously...but it's based on facts. People who live in sparsely populated rural areas are usually easier to deal with than people in the city. Or maybe there's just the same percentage of jerks in the city as in the country but you just run into more of them in the city. You know what I mean.

It all comes down to putting your skis on the snow and making turns. It's all good.

It's too bad the corporate hogs have snatched up Burke. Things probably haven't changed much except prices will go up. I just hope the hogs don't get their hands on Cannon.

Burke was on my must try list this season but it doesn't look like it is going to happen. May try to make it our Pres weekend trip next year.

+1. But I thing of all the organizations to gobble it up, Stengler and his company are the ones. Burke has had a tough go of it; a bit off the beaten track. Last thing we need is another NELSAP.

I'll be there March 9th if anyone wants to make some tracks.

BTW, Thursday was a great day, a lot like Magic, tiny lines (but bigger than Magic's). Got all over the mt. The one down side is that the older I get, the longer the run-out is. East Glade was stupendous.

I really want to try Burke again. Only time I've been there was over a decade ago, it was an ice storm, and half the trails were closed. I don't think they even had all the woods they have now back then either.

another sweet load of smoke to blow up someone's ass. seriously, people getting teary eyed and nostalgic about a ski resort spouting off about basic tenets of being a decent person is f'in sad.

the vibe at a hill is based on the locals who work and support the hill. live and ski somewhere long enough you get to know everyone, good and bad and in between, but either way, it means not being a douche, because chances are your crossing paths somewhere down the line

these adds are for the new clientele, the weekender spending the money these resorts will need to exist. pretty grim that you have to spend time reminding people to not be an asshole. must be one hell of a long ride from flatland wherever reciting the above mantra as if it is something unique to JPR and Qbert

Wow. The force of cynicism is strong within you. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with a gentle reminder every now and then to not be a douche.

Locals don't need ads to convince them to ski one place or another. If its close, you'll ski there. So, yes, the ads are aimed at the flatlanders, those people that keep the resort alive so the locals can ski (and work) there mid-week when it is painfully obvious that no money is being made.

I don't live near JPR but I have skied there on a regular basis for a long time. My brother and sister own properties near the mountain. We contribute to the local economy and we are nice people. I keep going back to Jay because, as cheesy as it sounds, of people that are raised Jay. Yes, that's the vibe, the marketing folks have captured it and you don't like it. Whether it's chatting with Don at Firsttrax, yakking up the cool ladies that work at the Stateside shop, running into Alpine Ed on the Bonnie or saying thanks to the poor bastard freezing his ass off while he bumps that chair on a powder day, those are the people that make it and sometimes, the flatlanders need to be reminded. Good on JPR for having the balls to do it.

Good luck with the rest of your life. Think about this quote from Elvis Costello:

Oh I used to be disgusted
and now I try to be amused.
But since their wings have got rusted,
you know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.

I'm sure your nice. That wasn't the point. You and many others have been a part of the mountain long before it and burke needed to be steered to financial salvation. It doesn't take balls to know what decency is, it does take balls to have 2 faces though.

thanks. good luck with yours as well. think about this quote from jesus rodriguez:

and you want to be held in the highest regard
it delights you so much if he's trying so hard
and you try to conceal your ordinary way
with a smile or a shrug or some stolen cliche

I wonder where the kid smashing the other kids snowman add went, its hard to keep up with the image selection from year to year.

Maybe the soul power of this years effort would be enhanced by them showing how many "locals" they saved this year from being destitute.

once you start polishing you'd better not stop.

Right.

Hard to keep up with the issues being thrown around here. I think marketing and ads are fair to critique but you've gone a step beyond that. What would make you happy, kingdom-tele? I get the feeling that the resorts in the NEK are damned if the do, damned if they don't from your perspective. As far as reminding oneself not to be a douche, just as high a percentage of "locals" as "flatlanders" probably need that reminder. Maybe we all do. We all have our bad moments...

At least this newer Jay marketing is trying to appeal to an attitude rather than trying to put lipstick on a pig. Modern marketing is geared towards appealing to people's sense of self. Marketing doesn't have to say what JPR is, it can say "if you are this person then you should be here." Most ski resort marketing is doing that these days.

I have a connection to the mountain but I don't live there, you do. That is what I am missing in this discussion, so help me out. Are people getting shafted? Are the jobs going to dry up? Are property values going through the roof so that underemployed locals can't afford housing? Are the Newport business developments really vapourware?

Or are you just pissed that the mountain is changing in ways you don't agree with? I have to admit that I was but I am mellowing on that front.
