To elaborate a bit:

*shudder*

To quote Mr Gumby, "my brain hurts"

Actually...I get it. If anything like that explanation was provided in the NASTAR FAQs...I'd be all set...except for making a 36. *sigh*

To almost quote Eddy Murphy...."I'm 50 Dammit" *smirk*

OK, so now I go back and use that psychomath on my times and the pace times and get my Handicap *with Real glycerine vibrofoam) and eeek 2 or 3 seconds off my time and GRAB THAT BRONZE!

Would I could I score my Wed runs for both groups? Double dip *so to speak*?

Thanks ROARK...nice helmet.

Read This link about handicaps it should make it about clear as mud.

HEH! Yep...saw that and said.. "?!"

With ROARK's explanation...it all makes sense.

Come to find out (if I'm applying the algorithm correctly)...I missed Bronze by about .3 seconds on both runs. :<

So I'm a bit angry...and a lot excited. I think it was Rob who said..."if you don't finish with a smile..." It's got me amped. By 11AM of race day...I've got butterflies. Reminds of the old days in competitive hoops.

Aw Yeah! Braonze Baby...BRONZE! Last night @ Wachusett.

So, now how does the Handicap thingy work for "Silver"? Not sure if I'm off the mark here or not...but my handicap # is now 47...since "that" number is in the Silver category...do I follow the same algorithm and multiply the "par time" by 1.47 to see what my silver medal time is?

I feel so good about that Bronze medal....I'm wearing it today. *what a putz* HEY! If it was easier for me to get...I wouldn't be making such a deal out of it I guess.

Three weeks of racing left to get to that next level.

Congrats! PM sent.

To get a silver you need (at your age) to get a "handicap" of 36 or lower.

I think the term handicap is misleading, it's not like a golf handicap. The only factor 'leveling' the field is age. At my age I need to get a handicap of 25 for a silver.

Now if someone can explain the point calculation I'd be set...

Is THAT all. *smirk* Got it...sort of. Just keep working it and improve technique.

Looks like I'm lined up to atend a Sunrise Clininc @ Wachusett next Wed. Maybe I'll get some actual practice on some gates vs the two runs I get on race night.

I had personal best times last night and was feeling pretty good during the runs. I'm sure if I selected better lines, I could shave some time.

Thanks pal.

OK...here's how "obsessed" I've become over this...and WHO has "Skiing is my addiction" under their avatar?!

I'm in the shower and get this flash traffic from medula oblongata...YO! Multiply the handicap # in the silver column for your age group by the current PAR time for the course and you'll get an estimate (at least) of the new "goal" time to get a silver medal!

Like the beer ad says..."BRILLIANT!"

So. I need to drop 3+ seconds off my current best time...get down to 34.51. Hmmmm.

youze guyz are killin me!
I hadn't checked in for a few daze (work keeps getting in the way), when I read this thread, you guys are a hoot! I'm glad you're not taking this whole thing too seriously.
Checkout the club team ranking: we are 156 out of 1281 teams that's pretty damn good. You're better than 88% of all nastar club teams nationally.

The most amazing thing this year that I learned is all the things I'm doing wrong. Even now that I have the head knoweldge, I'm not going any faster. I felt much better after I talked with a pro racer. He went to Stratton Mt. Academy and now does Nastar for fun. His handicap is a "2" . Yup, you heard me, two. He said he spent MONTHS just working on getting his weighting/unweighting/center of gravity to where it should be. 30 runs a day, 7 days a week. Now I don't feel so bad.

Another area I am focusing on this year is looking one gate ahead. Up till now, I didn't know I was in trouble till I was in trouble. Now I know a gate ahead of time if I'm gonna be in trouble. It's actually made me feel more confident and allowed me to be more agressive in the gates.

With all that, my HC hasn't improved one iota. Then again, Mr. 2 handicap made me feel a helluva a lot better about my chances for improvement. I guess I just need a hill in my backyard. Or at least 10 minutes from the office.....

Yep. We have a Master Racing guy on our Wa team who went to Waterville....a long time ski pal who races elsewhere and joined our Wa team just for fun.

So about two weeks into it...and I see he's still talking about mistakes he's made etc. So I start to wonder if this sport is akin to making freethrows in basketball...and points are deducted if you hit the rim when the ball goes in.

So today @ Wachusett...I tried the public NASTAR course just to get some practive with the gates.

It appears to have worked. I shaved about 2 seconds off my 3rd run from my 1st.

Way to go! Shows you that after head knowledge, the most important thing you can do is practice, practice, practice. I wish I could shave 2S off my times. I'm happy with 0.5 these days!

First off...love the new look...sorry if I haven't noticed it earlier.

Second...VIOLA...I'm within about .33 seconds of Silver. Pratice earlier in the week...combined with tips from team mates has dropped my Wa Night League time from the upper 42 seconds range down to 34.18.

Still Bronze medals on both runs...but saving time here and there and one more week of Night League to obtain Silver baby.

Aw Yeah!

Monday Night AZ crew -

Here are the extra non-Monday nights that we may be racing.

King of the Hill - Thursday 3/9/06 Not sure who qualifies for this (But I would like Treeskier should make it)
Finals - Thursday 3/16/06 (I think we should make it as a team assuming we can stay in third place for Mondays, but I don't remember the rules)
Friday 3/17/06 - Top 50 racers from all nights compete against the top 50 racers from Gunstock. That leaves me out. Might be Treeskier again.

No SiIver for Sky

So it appears my first year of racing has ended on a less than wonderful note. I "gained" two seconds last night. WRONG DIRECTION PAL!! :<

So, instead of shaving off the .33 for Silver, I gained 1.8 and setteld for Bronze again.

Ah well...practice practice practice.

I must say it was a lot more fun that I anticipated. And my team mates (who know I've never raced before) all agree that my skiing technique has improved substantially.

So I guess I'll consider it a successful inuagural run and use the elusiveness of that Silver Medal to motivate the rest of this season's skiing...and the coming off-season workouts.
