I was surprised to see the two black diamond trails in the Highlands of Hunter East listed as open for much of the past week. The Poma lift serving those trails, while still on the trail map, is not included on the lifts & trails report and I thought it was no longer operational ? Is this a case of, like Sugarbush, they are listing trails as open even though there is no lift service ?

yep. They replied to someone on FB recently that they're open as hike-to trails.

Also what is the easiest way to check out the Rip Van Winkle monument near the summit Lodge ?

Cool sculpture, never knew about it and will check it out.

Google says he's along the path that went to the top station of the Zipline, above Upper K27 about here:

DOA for the accident on Annapurna - the other 3 that were helicoptered out on Saturday are still in hospital per the (reliable) rumer mill. The Hellgate collusion accident that shut down the main mountain left the skier with a serious concussion, rib and lung issues. Apparently the snowboarder involved was okay enough to ride away. Sunday all okay as far as they know - the guy in the Chef's race refused the helicopter - bad decision. Ski patrol was busier on Sunday than Saturday....multiple kids from the race and freestyle competition.

The crowds are insane which is definitely contributing to it.

David Slutzky was one of the sculptures. They worked on this for years at the base of the mountain and had it moved to the top where it is now. Not far into the woods past the defunct Zipline start platform.

you can get to it, sort of by the Otis lift. Poma is history. They were using it for kids race training this weekend.

Is refusing the helicopter that bad a decision? Did they survive ? If your capable of making the decision it's probably not that life threatening and insurance is not paying for a helicopter ride. An ambulance ride is expensive enough I couldn't imagine what a helicopter ride would cost.

Helicopter costs between 12 to 80 thousand according to Google. Insurance may cover who knows how much? I might start carrying a No Helicopter card.
