I have heard the rumors. I don't like fueling them. This would be a great question for the AZ challenge. I have sent a few e-mails as have others. I bought one of these ASC passes and the early and late season advantages were a big part of it for me.

that is a good idea for the AZ challenge, not too sure they would give info away like that though. Knowing ASC they wouldnt tell you and just blame it on the weather and just open in mid nov.

I wasted my cash on that stupid pass... I'd never get one again..
Was counting on KMart staying open a few weekends in May... And I discovered how awesome Sugarbush is too... I'm more likely to now drive the extra to get to the "Bush"

OK folks, as said, ASK Killington. We're going to throw open the Killington AZ Challenge because of this news...so please...ask him.

Personally, I am holding off on buying an ASC pass because of this news...

I doubt the thanksgiving rumor. However you can bet they won't open untill the long range forcast is favorable which won't be untill late october/mid november.

Remember it is much more difficult for them to open early since the removal of the k-peak double with it's midstation.

Question. I have heard grumglings of a a later season opening and earlier season closing that normal. Are these stories true? I am concerned seeing I have already bought my ASC pass for next season and early and late season skiing were factors in my purchasing this pass again. Curious to know.. What is real, and what is rumor?.

I don't think you'll know the real story until the bullwheels start turning in the fall..

Perhaps, but I like to think Killington/ASC will take this opportunity to establish a lot of credibility with the online skiing/riding community and answer truthfully. The feedback on last season's challenges included the observation that some reps answered enthusiastically and honestly while others sort of just fulfilled the obligation. With AlpineZone.com's News section, I think many in the Industry are now really starting to notice AZ as a viable medium to connect with Northeast skiers and riders. I hope the responses to the challenges this summer will be ones the ski areas can be proud of and ones we can appreciate as truth. The opportunity for our respect is certainly valuable in my mind and I hope many of them take it seriously...

If you talk to somebody like Rich McGarry who operates the place, you'll hear words like "We'll open when we can offer a quality product". The last couple of years, quality product was defined as top to bottom skiing rather than a pickup truck ride to ski Rime. This pushed the opening date out since it's tough to blow snow on lower Bunny Buster in October and early November.

I presume this saved Killington money since labor and equipment wear and tear running pickup trucks, the Canyon Quad, and the Glades triple is tough to recoup on steeply discounted day ticket sales. It's not like you can charge $70 for 1 trail and 600 vertical feet.

I guess you could argue that with all the dirt cheap season passes, 1 top to bottom trail doesn't cut it either and they need to have enough acres online to spread out all those people. If you were at Killington on a Saturday in November this year, the trail congestion was the worst I've ever seen. If I were Killington's liability insurance provider, I'd probably refuse to cover them since they've gone and created a very unsafe product.

This is true. And AlpineZone is probably meaningless in respect to their bottom line. Can I at least dream that we're significant though...?

We are... But the question is - Do they care?
I believe sites like these can positively or negatively influence the ski industry..

I've had enough of ASC, Intrawest and all the other BS companies trying to suck the soul out of what we love so they can have higher returns...
