In the course of one week, I witnessed two very creative driving maneuvers. They might not be so unusual in a congested urban setting, but both were in Concord Mass.
The first method is called red light avoidance strategy. First, you stop at the controlled
intersection. You then make a right-on-red (1). Then execute a U-turn (no prohibition) (2). You know have the green signal, execute a right turn (3) and proceed on your journey. All entirely legal. If you are on a cycle, as I witnessed, before you begin this maneuver, pass the long lineup of cars already waiting at the light.
The second method, well, I would not call it quite legal. This occurred at the infamous "Crosby's Corner", where taking a corner at 45mph is quite common. I'll just call it, the "creative u-turn on red". Start by taking the short-cut ramp to the intersecting road(1). Make a U-turn into the opposing lane of traffic (2). You will not die in this scenario if you take advantage of the opposing traffic delayed green light. Make your left turn (3) and you have now executed a u-turn on a road where highway speeds of 65+ mph are common.
In my 25 years of residence in Massachusetts, both were a first for me. Can you top these?
