but can't places come up with some rules regarding where it is and is not safe for boarders to sit down and strap in?

You'd think it would be a function of ski patrol or moutnain "rangers"....

This weekend at a resort in Maine (not goingt to be specific).... a middle aged gentleman (50 or so) crisscrossed with my 9 year old daughter and the back of his skis hit my daughters tips. He was oblivious to uphill traffic (never too a peak, I watched the entire time)...they crossed and the collision knocked my daughter to the group. He skied on. My daughter was not hurt. I did catch up to the guy about 100 yards down the slope and let him know what just happened. I couldnt believe it, this guy said "it wasnt me, are you sure it was not someone else?).

I assured him that it was him, who else is wearing purple and lime green one piece ski outfit. He became belligerent and asked me "what do you want out of me". I said an apology would be a start.....He yelled back, "well, I am sorry" and skied off.

I just do not understand some people......how could he not feel his skis hitting someone else....never mind that he was withing 12 inches of knocking my daughter out cold.

Sorry for the rant.

I got cutoff so I went over to the sprawled out skier.......

and Pole-whipped him several times then held out my pole like a sword and put a Z shaped slash in his down filled jacket. THen I grabbed one of his loose skiis and took off.

They ask boarders all the time to move off to the side and out of traffic, but they can't be everywhere everytime a boarder straps in.

BTW, most boarders will move without complaint once you point out that they're blocking the trail.

I see this a lot at Hunter... And at least at the top - people usually stop when they can't go any further... So if people are standing around in a group and they can't get to where they need to be - they just strap in... Rather then pushing their way through the crowd and ending up as a negative post here at the AZ...

It's a whole lot easier to move around on skis then it is for boarders to skate around..
It would be nice if skiers were more cognizant of this...

I have had skiers stand in front of me after I have "stepped in" into my bindings blocking my line many times so I couldn't move without first running over them and they knew I was there.. Maybe it's their way of paying a boarder back for some past misdeed..

Exactly...

this past weekend, i was on a BC traverse back to a ski area proper and was generally going slow because there were some thin cover spots on the traverse still. a boarder with a full head of steam came up behind me yelling to move aside. i gladly complied as if the boarder stopped he would have had a lot of walking to do.

i don't think it is a skiers or boarders issue. all sliders regardless of equipment need to be incognizant of other sliders regardless of plant type. this includes skiers being courteous to borders on flats but it also includes boarders lining an entire slope while sitting down instead of clustering (that effects other boarders sliding, not just skiers). is it generational or perception, i dunno. i think it is just human nature and most people comply with baser instincts to look out for number one first and to hell with civil society.

the bottom line is the damn golden rule. it goes beyond knowing the code and some might argue is more important or the essence of the code. the root word of civilization is the word civil, but you wouldn't know it sometimes.

What no Pole-whipping?

When I ski and someone gets near my line I usually give them a giant spray or skim right by them. The key is to never look back.

does anybody else notice a lot of instructors not looking uphill before starting out? it may be just me noticing it now but it seems to happen a lot.

Yes!

They're assuming and expecting you to see them...and setting a poor example for their class in the process.

Just like the poor lift line etiquette you see from lesson groups who just attack the line and cut everyone off en masse. That stuff is just plain wrong! Again, setting a bad example for their class, especially when it's kids. I never allowed my classes to do that when I taught...you alternate and wait your turn because you are still cutting off a whole lot of paying customers.

I'm going to stop now because I could go way off on this specific topic.

Pretty funny stuff in here. I hope the person who whips people is kidding.

Getting cut off is part of the sport. I dont get cut of very often. Its common sense if you are approaching someone and they is no rime or reason to there turns stay away from them.
If you get cut off you are skiing to slow, pick it up junior.
