I was thinking Friday as I skied at Black how much of a marketing machine they DON'T have. What really struck me was their honesty, sincerity and love of skiing. So I sign up for their email list and today I get this:

"Black is White

This winter is shaping up to be the best of early snow conditions that we’ve seen in 15 years at Black Mountain. Looking at all of the smiles on the faces of our skiers and riders we’re going to have one terrific winter.

Sitting in the base lodge listening to a skier’s conversation about how good the conditions were, brought back a sense of old times and tons of snow. With everyone concerned about global warming we have gotten in the mindset that our eastern skiing starts later each season. This year we who love the sport of skiing and riding are most fortunate to have these gorgeous December conditions.

So it’s a very happy holiday season and let’s give thanks to the Gods of snow who have decided to smile down upon us. From all of us at Black Mountain we wish you and yours the very best for the holidays and the New Year. Happy trails to you."

You can't get much more down to earth that that. What a great place.

I agree.

Black Mountain doesn't "have to" buy into the corporate resort model. That they are still open, optimistic, and thankful today speaks VOLUMES about how committed they are to remaining open, and they do have a skier/customer base.

I can't remember all the gory details about how/when their heavy investment in snowmaking went up in electrical fires twice in one season, but they are still on the map, they are NOT NELSAP!

There has been somewhat of a diaspora of employees throughout the MWV. I know our long term Lifty Ricky ( Flynn) is now at Black, and you couldn't ask for a friendlier face or broader shoulders. I think Ricky has persuaded his own Dad to come out of retirement and do a little weekend lifty work for Black, too.

What "corporate Ski Resorts" deal with in their marketing messages is another topic.

Yeah, well I'm glad you guys are happy with Black's message but it's pretty useless to my vacation planning as they don't say anything about their fine dining or premium parking options. :)
