Some dude on TGR is asking about Kicking Horse. Haven't you gone there?

Yes... It rocks....
Hope to head back this winter... No place I'd rather go at this point..

Really? Can you compare it to Fernie, Whitewater and Red? All three of those were higher on my list than KH. KH seems to have great terrain but the general complaints are long runouts and far less snow than Fernie and Whitewater.
Of course this is all based on internet research, haven't been to BC yet.

Runout does suck... BC Terrain is awesome.. Ridge/chute terrain is great... When I was there the snow was deep and fresh... Been to Fernie a couple times - once was GREAT snow - the next - not so good... Both times - we're awesome though...

I'll probably end up doing a Fernie/KH thing... this year...

I'm not a great skier/rider as most seem to be on the TGR forum.. So maybe I should just step out of this conversation... Rather then try and explain why I really enjoy the place...
Because - somethings you just can't explain...

Yeah, me too...the only time I even look at TGR is when someone here posts a link. The best skiers in the world seem to go to TGR. Too intimidating for me.

But I'd rather get beta from you than any website. Because I KNOW how you can ride.

I used to think that. But in reality I think it is more like 95% of them are just like us. The 5% that is truly awesome just talks a lot and posts a ton of trip reports, making it look like it is a bigger group then it really is.

Agreed..plus that board is too confrontational...thats why i know they arent all that great...its that insecurity thing we discussed in another thread.

I just wonder what makes you guys think they are soo great over there? have you skied with them? Do you know them? otherwise, they could all just talk a big game...and you know what they say about big talkers...they usually arent big producers..its the quiet ones you have to watch out for...

I think both you (jim) and DMC both could ski/ride with anyone anywhere anytime...dont discount your skills...there is nothing special over on TGR..thats for sure..

Why thanks SkiDog. My post about TGR was tongue in cheek and kind of a goof. To me, TGR is kind of like those fishing shows where every fish landed is a trophy. Those guys on TGR never seem to ski inbounds and all of their TR's show sick exposed lines that would scare the hell out of most skiers. It doesn't seem real to me. Austin, in this regard I totally agree with you too...those TR's are probably from no more than 5% of their membership.

Hey, I've skied a few exposed BC lines in my time, not so much anymore because I have a family now. Still love Tucks and BC adventure of any kind, I just don't need the rush of the "you fall, you die" thing anymore.

So, where's the confetti? Do I get a free beer or something?

there are great skiers on every message board regardless of its style or culture. There are also a ton of people who talk a good game on forums. TGR, i'm sure, has its fair share of both. this place is cool for me cause i dont worry about trying to fit in to some preconcieved notion of what is "cool". I worried about that stuff when i was 16, not anymore.

I here ya - I don't discount my skillz... I ride how I ride and ski how I ski...

I'm just not really into getting into a "pissing match" with the people about why I like a mountain - cause mountains are big places where people can find stuff that other people will never even see... Being from Hunter and enjoying Killington, I've had to deal with that stuff - add nauseum.... All that really matters to me in this stage of my life is that I'm personally having fun and I go where I can have that fun...

You know im a Kmarter..so...i know the feeling...I also didnt think you were discounting your skills.... :D you been riding/skiing long enough and in enough good places for me to know you knnow what you're doing. ;-)

Its better to not get into it over at TGR as they tend to "know it all", so there I agree..but I hope you dont feel that same way here on thiis board..I hope you'd give "beta" on anything you've been to....whatever our...past differences, I do respect your opinions on where you've skied. For whatever its worth.

sorry if this question was asked already. Where is Kicking Hoarse? New England out west? Just curious because me and my brother want to try some New England backcountry skiing. Thanks,

I'll take a stab at it.................

I have skied KH............................one day. The snow was beat so I went..........................hiking. Here was my take. The place is full of nice chutes, with some excellent exposure if you like that kind of thing (I do). There is also some definite walk away for most.

What absolutely blew my mind was the OB terrain at the place. I hiked for 45 min off the heaven lift (gotta take the gondi up and then ski to the heaven lift) and found one of the best coulior bowls I have ever seen. There was a 15 - 20 ft cornice opener into a fan (so nice easy landing) and then a series of just great couliors. If you then boot pack up the opposite side (careful here as you will be on a cornice at the top!) you can look into somewhere between 4 - 10 similar bowls (there was about 2 tracks/bowl). Having this much OB was just mind blowing. In fact, if someone can tell me how to put an adobe photo in here, I have a pic of the shot.

The beauty of the horse is that you can ski the hill, hit their OB or tour Rogers pass right up the road. Rogers is fantastic touring for those of you who have not been. It is one of the premier touring areas on the continent.

KH: tougher terrain than Fernie, unless you are hiking to the top of Polar peak. Corner pocket type chutes are everywhere at KH. Terrain is tougher than Red and Whitewater. Although each has unbelievable terrain and the Red/whitewater/fernie combo has overall better snow and more deep.

Where would I go: Combine your trip. Red/whitewater/fernie is a great combo. KH/Fernie is also a nice combo, especially with Rogers tossed in. For the first, I would fly into Spokane, for the second Calgary would be the best bet.

TGR has that whole stupid JONG thing - I'm a low post count poster there so I'm considered a JONG and pretty much ignored until my post count gets higher.

But I met a few cool folks on the board at a party Sprite had a few weeks back, so I decided to check out the board. It takes some effort to work your way into the fray.
