Gee, if the snow was that great at the 'loaf, then why didn't you go heli skiing there? Oh, that's right, nothing else around.

Yeah, 47 feet of snow this season is fairly epic.

With the time change I guess you could get in close to the same amount of time on the hill, but the actual trip time is still 3 hrs longer.
Where are you driving from in CT? From New London I get to the MRV in 5 hrs.

I say 2 hours more, and an hour more on the hill, but OK, I'll give you 3 and the same time. Note that I'm sleeping for those 3 hours on the plane, instead of driving. Also, if there's any snow coming down, then all bets are off regarding how long it takes for MRG.

It's 5.5 -6 from Ffld, due to the parking lot otherwise know as 95. Once I hit New Haven it gets (a lot) better.

The real point is that you're skiing for free (that day) in Utah vs. coming off a 5-6 hour car ride and paying for VT. While I really like MRG and SB, I can't remember when, all things considered, I wouldn't rather be in UT.

Like snow has no effect on air travel? And if it's snowing hard in SL, you're not going to get very far when they close the roads.

Ugh...trying to nudge this thread back to productiveness.

Can you spare a helping hand?

o.k. i don't really have a home mountain but usually 90-120 minutes to ski. sometimes stay with friends/family but usually commute. lot's and lots of driving (4-6 days a week sometimes). in the past i lived close to decent mountains, but $$$$ has pulled me away. it all changes this winter

If you'd been paying attention, I like the NYC $, but live in CT. 37 days of which 5 were in VT, and the rest in Utah, CO, BC or CA.

Poser - tourist? And you list Copper and Winter Park as places you hope to go next season? Gee, why not include Bromley and Deer Valley while you're at it? Poser indeed!

big_vert: I don't think anyone has had a chance to say it, but welcome to the boards and we look forward to having you. I'm sorry to hear that you have not yet found the goods here in New England, but as with everything in life, you have to be persistent and know where to look. The stuff is there, you just need to find it.

Thank you Trail Boss.

I've been skiing in the east for just about exactly 40 years, so I think I have a fairly good idea what's available. It's just that after being exposed to what else is available in the US and Canada, I find some of the comments to be a little humorous.

I hope to be able to make a positive contribution to your forum.

Hope so. I have family in Fairfield. I might get a little nervous if I see anyone in an orange jacket when I'm down there now... ;)

Welcome.

copper and winter park because that is my cheap pass out there. either that or keystone/breck/vail. it's a coin toss, but i'm trying to avoid some of the crowds. taos and salt lake will get several trips when snow is too good to pass up. it's all good though, i'd ski bromley or deer valley and have fun all day long.

One word - Steamboat. 1.5 hours from the i-70 madness.

Took the kids there for their break this year as we're all tree skiers. Max 10 minute lines, but after 11am, ski right on the lift - went to Vail one day - up to 30 minutes was the norm, but a bit shorter in Blue Sky.

Nothing that will scare you silly, but good terrain all around (and those trees.......)

I was thinking of writing something disparaging about big_vert, but really I think I'm more jealous than anything else . . .

I think if I had the money to fly out west every weekend, I'd do it too.

There is a big difference between sharing experiences and sounding like an elitist. I love to hear about other's experiences.

"writing something disparaging about big_vert".

Have at it - why should you be different?

I plan winter business travel wisely. SLC is easy to get to from either coast, and I have big customers in Vancouver (Whistler) and San Fran (Lake Tahoe). Colorado ends up being on my account as I can't find a customer within a thousand miles or so, but I'm enamoured with the tree skiing at Steamboat which is why I usually head back there. The rest of the i-70 resorts don't do a lot for me, although I like Keystone for some reason. always felt like home - like Mt. Snow does to me.

I am trying to develop a need to have to go see an energy company or two in Alberta as well so that I can get back to Banff. I wasn't impressd with the snow (it was like VT - there's a softball for you), but the scenery was as outrageous as advertised.

Although my company headquarters is near the Austrian Alps, I'm not terribly impressed with the Alps as far as snow either, again, it's like __. The extreme terrain is pretty impressive however.

Once you have Utah or CO powder, why would you want to go anywhere else. You know "packed powder" that when you jump on it you make a 6 inch indentation in the snow, rather than have your fillings fall out.

Nice to meet you anyway.

So you really enjoy bringing the best out in people, eh? ;)

I guess what I don't get is since you loathe Eastern skiing so much, what brings you to a Northeast skiing forum? :???: There are other skiing forums out there where you may relate a bit better you know...

Maybe he just wants to share his "love" of New England and the Northeast region in general. I know I am going to be pretty freaked out anytime I see orange on the slopes this winter ..

The instructors ar my little sub-1000K' vert piss-ant local hill with icey trails all wear orange jackets. We''ve referred to them as the orange goblins as they tend to all train together in large groups when the Sundown night crew skis. I'm going to be very frightened now...
