How often do you update your equipment.

It really depends, I bought my Dynastar Intuitiv 74s about a year and a half ago and I just bought a new pair of Legend 8000s. Before that I had a pair of Bandit X's that I had for probably 5 years and rode until the binding fell off. I've had my boots for 3 full seasons and probably have about 130 days on them. Boots will probably be next season's investment at which point I'll go for the custom footbeds.

My 5th season of skiing, purchased original equipment in season 1, got new skis season 3 and 4, new boots season 4, looking at another pair of skis and possibly boots for this season.

I update as economics allow. During prime childrearing years, it hasn't been more than about every 5 to 7 years. Outfitting a growing family of five isn't cheap, no matter how you cut it. It's not just skis and boots and poles. Parkas, pants, hats, gloves, goggles ( times 3 growing kids each season), inevitable requests for lodge nourishment, lift tickets and lessons obfuscates the cost of new skis and boots no matter how you cut it.

So my friends, that's why you see a lot of dropouts from skiing and these lists once the kids come. I stick in here with you nonetheless, knowing you are predominantly young, unbridled (without children that is) with far more discretionary income than I have for myself. Not a criticism, just a fact of life.

When the shift to carved skis started, I ached to get a pair, but couldn't do it. Then, when the only skiing I was doing with a young brood was either skiing backwards in front of them or slowly on the bunny hill, I couldn't justify it. I almost bought some snowblades it got so slow.

Before that, when there was discretionary income, every 2 or 3 years.

I bought new boots when the linings disintegrated and the bottoms were so worn that they wouldn't seat securely in the bindings. Finally, this past spring I got new boards. Even then, they were demos.

Skiing's expensive and exclusionary, no matter how you cut it. But that's not going to stop a passion for the sport. I'll just find a different way to skin the cat....

Gloves will last me a season (at most) before wearing out. Doing the patrol thing is tough on gloves.

You need a pair of Rocky Mountain Hand Shoes. Mine are on their 6th season and going strong. Well worth the small extra cost.

Total equipment junkie here....

....name the sport and there's equipment to buy....

But I've honed my buying to waiting and getting the right pieces at the right time for the right reason for the right price. Got a house full of kids, and the outfitting of the "troops" is pretty intense....but we shop like little old ladies. I've always felt reaching for the better and best stuff was worth it in the long run. Just retired last year my 11-12 year old North Face Steep Tech....bought it the first year it came out (when the pricing redefined ski clothing pricing)....but figured I got a bargain when it's lasted (and it's still in great condition waiting in my secondary equipment area to be used as needed) for about 350+ ski days...

Rock-climbing....sky's the limit....

Mountain biking...uh-oh...

Skiing....just sprung for a pair to fit between my groomed carvers and my fat/deep/crud beasts....the price was right on the ski and binder....I'd had my eye on them for about a year, and this year's reviews all confirmed how I felt they'd fit in....looking forward to the UPS guy arriving this week.

At the end of season sales this spring we'll be getting a bunch of snow shoes to have at our place in a "friends and family" pile so we and any visitors can grab a pair and head out for a stroll. We'll also be researching a similar theme with regard to x-c equipment.

Every 3 or 4 years (@ ~15 days/yr) for skis seems about right. By that time, 25% of my base is ptex and ski technology has usually changed enough to make a difference.

Longer for boots. Never for poles. Clothing - whenever it's shredded.

I provide my equipment with an update on snow conditions and next likely ski date nearly every night. It appreciates being kept in the loop on things.

Well what about personal issues? I think it is quite obtuse of you to assume your skis only like hearing about the snow.

I will update them on almost anything but my favorites are the debriefing after a day on the slops. If I've fallen I then read them the riot act. Later of course when I feel bad we have some make up se....

Is this getting too wierd?

I usually have to get my skis drunk first. Of course, then they're all hungover the next day, and you know how that can be.

Okay, maybe a little weird...
